As the spring season approaches, the Big Valley Christian School track and field team is gearing up for another year of competition. With a new league and a small team, Coach Kristi Hartfield is focused on developing a well-rounded and competitive group of athletes. The team is built on a strong foundation of returning players from last season. Leading the way are Jordan Beers and Karlie Powell, both of whom have shown their versatility as sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers. Their strong performances in the post-season last year have set the bar high for this season. Claire Medhurst is another athlete to watch, as she continues to improve in both her mid-distance runs and High Jump. With a hardworking mindset and determination to constantly better herself, Medhurst is expected to make a significant impact on the team. As for team leadership, Coach Hartfield emphasizes the importance of having a strong work ethic and a desire to push oneself. This is why she has chosen Eddie Del Torro as the likely captain for this season. Del Torro has shown great leadership qualities and serves as a role model for his teammates. The team's chemistry and camaraderie are also essential to the success of the team. Coach Hartfield understands the importance of fostering a positive and supportive environment for her athletes. She plans on motivating her players through fun and competitive activities during practice, as well as providing positive reinforcement and challenging them to compete with others. However, preparing for this season has not been without its challenges. With a new league and a small team, Coach Hartfield has had to adjust her coaching style and plan accordingly. Her main focus is on individualized training plans for each athlete to ensure that they are prepared for their specific events. Additionally, with many of her teammates finishing their winter seasons and not yet joining the track and field team, Coach Hartfield faces the challenge of building a cohesive team. The team's schedule for this season includes nine meets, with the biggest challenge being the move up to a higher league. This means facing stronger opponents and tougher competition but also provides the opportunity for growth and improvement. In terms of training, Coach Hartfield has put a heavy focus on mental health and finding the balance between competition and enjoyment of the sport. She believes that a healthy mind is crucial for athletic success and focuses on building a supportive and positive team culture. In terms of focusing on the team's strengths and weaknesses, Coach Hartfield has been working on form and core strength in the first few weeks of practice. With a small team, their weakness lies in numbers, but their strength lies in the determination of each athlete to try their best in every event. Coach Hartfield's coaching philosophy is rooted in their faith, as the team runs and trains for Jesus. While competition is important, being a light and representing their faith is the ultimate goal. In conclusion, the Big Valley Christian School track and field team is ready to take on the challenge of a new league and tough opponents. With a strong foundation of returning players, talented new additions, and a dedicated coach, they are poised for success in the upcoming season. But for these athletes, it's not just about winning.
