The Big Walnut High School Lady Eagles basketball team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. With a strong core of returning players and promising new additions, Coach Carey Largent is determined to lead the team to success. In this preview article, we had the opportunity to speak with Coach Largent about his expectations for the upcoming season and the players to watch out for.
Leading the pack of returning players is a talented group who know each other and the game well. Denza Allen, Remy Largent, Lexi Federer, and Alexa Morris, all have a deep love for the game and their team. Allen, a 6’1 senior, will bring her height and experience to the court, while Largent, a 5’10 senior, will use her skills and knowledge to guide the team. Federer and Morris, both 5’9 juniors, bring a competitive edge and a love for the game that is evident on the court.
According to Coach Largent, this group’s chemistry and camaraderie will undoubtedly add a lot of value to the team’s dynamics. In terms of leadership, Coach Largent looks for players who possess the qualities of commitment, dedication, and a team-first mentality. This year’s captains are Sydney Mobley, a 6’2 sophomore, Jozie Syroka, a 5’5 junior, and Shelby Damron, a 5’10 freshman.
These players have shown their dedication to the game and the team, and are setting an example for their teammates on and off the court. One of the biggest challenges the team has faced in preparing for this season is the impact of fall sports on the players’ availability. With football and soccer competing for athletes, Coach Largent understands the importance of verbal encouragement and explaining the “why” behind his coaching strategies.
He also makes sure his players can see and hear his belief in them, helping them visualize their potential even when they may not see it in themselves. The team’s schedule for this season is a mix of tough opponents and exciting games. Coach Largent acknowledges the incrementally better performance of all teams in their league, making every game a competitive one.
However, he highlights that while the schedule poses a challenge, it also brings out the best in the team and prepares them for the postseason. When it comes to his coaching style, Coach Largent admits that it has become tougher over the years.
