In their first season competing at the 5A level, the Broomfield High School wrestling team proved it belongs among the state’s best. The Eagles finished as runner-up in both the League and Regional Championships and capped the year with a Top-15 finish in Colorado's highest classification—a strong sign of what's to come.
Key Contributors & Impact
Manny Lopez, a senior and state placer, epitomized toughness and leadership—wrestling through a torn ACL, MCL, and labrum to finish the season strong.
Nick Penfold led the team in points and was just one match away from placing at State.
August Soto and Alberto Cedillo also came within a match of placing, providing vital depth and grit.
The team had eight state qualifiers, six of whom will return next season.
Growth & Development
Several wrestlers made major strides as the season progressed, including Penfold, Cedillo, Soto, Asher Diamond, Mason Smiley, Manny Lopez, and Ethan Brown. Their dedication was evident in both their performance and continued development.
Team Resilience
The Eagles battled adversity all season, none more visibly than Manny Lopez, who refused to sit out despite significant injuries. The team’s collective toughness was a hallmark, especially in pressure moments during postseason runs.
Senior Leadership
The senior class, including Lopez, Mason Smiley, Zander Montoya, and Keegan Pottorff, brought experience and consistency. All four were four-year lettermen and Regional placers, helping establish a strong foundation for the next generation.
Future Outlook
Coach Zechmann is optimistic about the future, with a core group of talented juniors stepping into senior roles next season. “We’ve got a strong group returning,” he said, “and we’re only going to get better.”
Offseason Goals
This offseason, the program will focus on building stronger relationships and continuing the climb toward excellence. The foundation is set, and the Eagles are ready to rise higher in the 5A ranks.
