As the spring season approaches, the Buckholts High School Track & Field team is gearing up for a new season with determination and drive. With Coach Robert Smith at the helm, the team is looking to make a name for themselves in the competitive world of track and field. We sat down with Coach Smith to get a preview of what we can expect from the team this year. The first question on everyone's mind is, who are the top returning players from last season? Coach Smith wasted no time in highlighting the team's star athlete, Jessika Polk. As the only returning player from last season, Polk brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team. She was an Area Qualifier last year in the 300m hurdles, and Coach Smith has high hopes for her this season. Her dedication and hard work make her a valuable asset to the team. But Coach Smith's main focus is not just on individual players, but on the team as a whole. He emphasizes that the main goal for the team this year is to get as many kids to the area and region as possible. This shows a strong team mentality and a desire to succeed together. In addition to Polk, Coach Smith also has his eye on Marc King, a freshman who is expected to make an immediate impact on the team. King is a versatile athlete, excelling in the 200m, 400m, and 800m sprints, as well as the long jump and triple jump events. His speed and agility make him a formidable opponent on the track, and Coach Smith is excited to see what he can bring to the team. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Smith looks for specific qualities in potential candidates. He values leadership, dedication, and a positive attitude. As of now, there are no official team captains, but Coach Smith mentioned that King is a strong candidate for the role. He also mentioned that there are a few other players who are vying for the position, showing that there is healthy competition within the team for leadership roles. With a small team and a challenging schedule, the Buckholts Track & Field team is not without its obstacles. Coach Smith acknowledges that the team's biggest challenge is their numbers, as they are a tiny 1A school with only a few kids on the team. However, he also sees this as an opportunity for the team to come together, work hard, and defy expectations. Despite the challenges, Coach Smith is confident that the team will rise to the occasion and make their mark in the upcoming season. When it comes to strengths and weaknesses, Coach Smith believes that the team's biggest weakness is their lack of practice in the past. As this is his first year coaching the team, he has made it a priority to instill a strong work ethic and discipline in the players. He emphasizes the importance of practicing, conditioning, and putting in the work in order to be prepared for meets. On the other hand, the team's strengths lie in their determination and drive to improve. Coach Smith is confident that with hard work and dedication, the team can overcome any weaknesses and continue to improve throughout the season. Looking at the team's schedule for this season, Coach Smith acknowledges that there are some tough opponents on the horizon. However, he also sees this as an opportunity for the team to challenge themselves and grow as athletes. He is particularly looking forward to facing off against larger schools and seeing how the team stacks up against them. This shows a positive and competitive mindset, and Coach Smith's confidence in his team is evident. In conclusion, the Buckholts High School Track & Field team has a lot to prove this season. With a small team and a challenging schedule, they may face some obstacles along the way. However, under the leadership of Coach Smith and with the dedication and determination of each individual player, this team has the potential to achieve great things. They may be a small team, but they have big ambitions, and with their hard work and teamwork, they are sure to make their mark in the world of track and field.
