Key Contributors This year, the Calumet High School gymnastics team faced significant changes, with a much smaller roster following the graduation of several key athletes. However, the two gymnasts who stepped up, Nora Keranen and Brooklyn Tatman, played pivotal roles in the team’s success. Both athletes were dominant throughout the season, competing at a high level in all events and the all-around competitions. Nora, a strong and inspiring leader, excelled in all areas and set the standard for her teammates. Her leadership was instrumental in guiding freshman Brooklyn Tatman, who quickly found her footing and proved to be a valuable asset to the team. Season Overview The 2023-2024 season unfolded much as Coach DeeAnna Gariepy expected. Nora Keranen led the charge with consistent performances that earned her top honors. Despite the challenges of having a smaller team, the gymnasts qualified for Regionals in all events, and both Nora and Brooklyn delivered standout performances at the Great Northern Conference Meet. A major highlight was Nora's first-place finish on Beam at the GNC Meet, an achievement that exemplified her steady composure and skill. Defining Moments The Great Northern Conference Meet was undoubtedly the defining moment of the season. Going into the meet, both Nora and Brooklyn were aware of the strong competition they would face. Yet, they surpassed their own expectations with outstanding performances. Nora placed second in the all-around, clinched first on Beam, and earned multiple top-four finishes. Brooklyn, in her debut season, finished fourth in the all-around, with top-five finishes in Beam, Bars, and Vault—cementing her potential for the future. Player Development Throughout the season, both Nora and Brooklyn grew into bigger roles. As Team Captain, Nora thrived under pressure, guiding her teammates with a positive attitude and unwavering focus. She demonstrated that leadership is about more than just athleticism—it's about mental resilience and inspiring others to perform at their best. Brooklyn’s growth was one of the standout stories of the season. She continually worked on refining her skills, pushing herself to perform better at every meet. Her commitment to improvement and her competitive spirit were evident as her scores climbed, and her confidence soared. Team’s Response to Challenges In terms of dealing with challenges—whether that be injuries, tough losses, or the general pressure of competition—the team responded well. Coach Gariepy’s philosophy of focusing on resilience over raw competition helped the girls cope with setbacks and move forward. “It’s about performance, overcoming disappointment, and not letting losses define us,” Coach Gariepy said. The team's ability to bounce back from challenges was a testament to the solid foundation built in practice. Senior Leadership While the team was small this year, Nora Keranen’s leadership was a cornerstone of the season. Her energy and positive attitude were contagious, creating a stable and motivated atmosphere for the team. Her leadership, both on and off the mat, was irreplaceable, and Coach Gariepy praised her for setting the example of how to push oneself to be the best. Looking Ahead The future of Calumet Gymnastics looks bright, especially with the continued development of Brooklyn Tatman. After an impressive first season, Brooklyn’s desire to refine her skills and raise her start value shows great promise for next year. Additionally, the team has talented gymnasts coming up through the ranks, which should make for an exciting and competitive season ahead. Offseason Focus Looking toward the offseason, Coach Gariepy emphasized the importance of maintaining balance. “I want the girls to relax and enjoy the sport,” she said. “Gymnastics is hard to step away from, but it's important that they continue training at whatever level and wherever they can.” With a more relaxed but strategic offseason approach, the team aims to return next season stronger, both mentally and athletically. A Season to Build On While it was a season of transition, Calumet High School Gymnastics proved that even in the face of challenges, hard work, leadership, and growth can lead to success. With an eager and talented group returning next year, the future looks incredibly promising for this resilient team.
