Calvary Chapel High School is gearing up for the new cross country season and coach Sharyn Peters is excited about the team’s potential this year. With a strong focus on consistency and team chemistry, the goal is to launch the boys' team to CIF. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Peters about the team and what we can expect this season.
One of the key strengths of this year’s team is the return of top runners from last season. Coach Peters is confident that their experience and dedication will have a significant impact on the team’s success. The top returning runner is junior Seth Miclea who will be entering his third year in Cross Country. What sets Seth apart is his commitment to the sport.
He consistently practices on his own and his dedication is a great asset to the team. With his experience and leadership, Seth will undoubtedly make a valuable contribution to the team’s success. While the returning runners will play a crucial role, there is also excitement surrounding the new players joining the team. One player that is expected to make an immediate impact is freshman Micah Hiltbrand.
Coach Peters describes him as an “athlete to watch out for” due to his impressive athleticism and achievements. Micah’s addition to the team is sure to bring a new level of competition and drive. For a strong and cohesive team, having the right players as team captains is essential. Coach Peters emphasizes the importance of qualities such as integrity, leadership, and the ability to uplift and motivate others.
While the team captains have not yet been officially announced, there are already players who are stepping up and showcasing their potential for the role. It is a testament to the strong leadership potential within the team. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is vital for any successful team.
Coach Peters understands this and has planned various team bonding activities such as beach days, game days, and competitions during summer practices. These activities not only strengthen the relationships between teammates but also help to develop a sense of camaraderie and unity within the team.
In terms of motivation, Coach Peters uses positive feedback and high-fives to encourage and uplift her players. She believes in pointing out what they are doing right and lightly spurring on their competitiveness with other runners of equal pace.
Additionally, she emphasizes the mental aspect of the game and encourages her players to push themselves even when they feel like giving up. Learning to overcome mental barriers and pushing oneself to the full potential is an important aspect of the sport.
