Campbell County Boys Basketball: From Slow Start to State Champs—A Story of Leadership, Grit, and Redemption

After a rocky beginning to their 2025 season, the Campbell County Camels boys basketball team completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent school history, culminating in a 4A State Championship. Guided by veteran Head Coach Bubba Hladky, the Camels combined senior leadership, skill development, and a relentless belief in one another to defy early odds and end the season on top. In a year that could have spiraled into another rebuilding campaign following a disappointing 2024, this team chose instead to build something special.

A Championship Season Forged in Adversity

Campbell County’s season began with uncertainty. The Camels started 1-6, a record reflective not of the team’s talent, but of early injuries and identity searching. Two of their key contributors, seniors Lane Hladky and Nomar Gonzalez, missed significant time early on. Their absence was felt across both ends of the court, but the team never lost belief in its potential. “We had a slow start, battled some injuries, and were finding our identity,” said Coach Hladky. “But once we got healthy and settled into who we were, the guys locked in.” The turnaround was emphatic. Once at full strength, the Camels stormed through conference play with an 11-1 record and hit their stride at just the right time. They finished the season shooting an impressive 57% from inside the arc, 40% from three, and 77% from the free throw line—numbers that speak to both discipline and execution. And then came the crowning achievement: the 4A State Championship. The Camels capped their season with a gutsy performance, coming from behind after trailing by 12 in the state final. Poise, experience, and an unshakable belief in their team carried them to victory.

Seniors Who Set the Standard

At the heart of Campbell County’s championship run was a senior class that brought a combination of talent, leadership, and mental toughness. Lane Hladky emerged as a go-to scorer who could hurt defenses from all three levels. He consistently hit big shots and provided leadership through example. Truman DeGrange was a vocal leader and offensive threat who led the team in three-point makes while relentlessly attacking the rim. Nomar Gonzalez was a defensive stopper, regularly taking on the toughest assignments. His ability to space the floor and make key plays in the clutch helped the team close out tight games. Michael Biggs functioned as a coach on the floor. Able to guard positions 1 through 5, Biggs brought a grit and unselfishness that elevated everyone around him. “These guys were locked in all year, from preseason to the state final,” said Coach Hladky. “They practiced and played the right way every single day.” The seniors were also steadying forces in pressure moments. Whether it was executing a comeback in the state final or withstanding a tough stretch of the season, their leadership never wavered.

Turning Points That Defined the Journey

One moment that stands out as a catalyst for Campbell County’s late-season surge came during a game against St. Thomas More. With the game tied and time winding down, Jack Andela sank a deep buzzer-beater to win it. That thrilling finish sparked a run in which the Camels won 12 of their next 13 games. Another emotional moment came in the state tournament. Former All-State player Mason Drube, who had graduated at semester to begin training with the University of Wyoming football team, returned to support the team from the bench. His leadership and energy during the championship game were vital in rallying the team when they needed a spark.

Unsung Heroes and Emerging Stars

While the senior core led the way, development from underclassmen was also pivotal. Brode Jarvis and Zach McMillan stepped into larger roles as the season progressed. Their growth and ability to battle bigger opponents gave the Camels valuable depth and versatility. “Brode and Zach made huge plays for us down the stretch,” Hladky said. “It was fun to watch them win battles and contribute in key moments.” Their development signals a bright future for the program—one that isn’t simply dependent on its graduating class.

Facing Adversity with Confidence

Injuries, early losses, and midseason growing pains never fractured this team. Instead, adversity became fuel. “They never lost faith,” said Hladky. “They believed in each other, and when our injured players returned, we became a tough team to beat.” That mindset carried over into pressure situations all year long. Whether facing deficits late in games or needing defensive stops to preserve leads, Campbell County showed maturity and composure beyond their years.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

With the championship trophy now resting in Campbell County’s trophy case, attention turns to what’s next. Fortunately for Coach Hladky, the returning group is both talented and eager. “What excites me is that the returning guys know what it takes to play at a high level,” he said. “They’re willing to put in the work.” The Camels will return players with height, speed, shooting ability, and a hunger to build upon the culture of excellence established this year. The focus in the offseason will be on refining offensive movement, improving spacing, sharpening reads, and continuing to develop shooting and attacking skills.

A Program Reenergized

Winning the 4A State Championship wasn’t just a goal—it was a statement. The 2025 season showed what’s possible when leadership, resilience, and player development converge. In many ways, this was more than just a championship team. It was a group that restored belief, overcame doubt, and modeled what true teamwork looks like. With a strong foundation and motivated returning players, the future of Campbell County basketball looks as bright as ever.
