As the new high school basketball season is fast approaching, all eyes are on the team at Carson High School in California. With a strong group of returning players and a promising lineup of new additions, this team has high hopes for the upcoming season. To get a better understanding of what we can expect from this year's team, we spoke with Coach Richard Masson about his thoughts and plans for the season.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Masson wasted no time in highlighting the players who have proven to be valuable assets to the team. Faith Woodson, a versatile player who can play multiple positions, was 2nd Team All-League last year and is expected to make a big impact on the court this year.
Isabella Ortiz, a returning senior, is also back and is known for her outside shooting abilities. Ula Savaii, another senior, is a strong presence around the rim and a vocal leader for the team. However, one of the biggest challenges this season will be the absence of starting forward Monica Hayden, who tore her ACL in the last playoff game of the previous season.
But it's not just the returning players who will make a difference for the team this season. According to Coach Masson, there are several new players who have the potential to make an immediate impact. Junior Isra Neal, who missed most of last season due to a broken hand, has shown potential to play at the college level. Sophomore Zoey Taylor, who was the team's MVP two years ago, is expected to bounce back from an ACL injury and return to her dominant form.
Audrey Baker, a transfer student from another school, is also expected to bring a lot of talent to the team after becoming eligible to play at the end of December. With such a strong group of both returning and new players, the team is poised to have a successful season. When it comes to leadership, Coach Masson looks for players who embody the qualities of a great captain.
This includes being vocal, dependable, and dedicated to the team's success on and off the court. The current captains on the team are Zoey, Isra, Faith, and Ula, all of whom were chosen by their teammates rather than the coach himself. This shows that the team is fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and unity, which will undoubtedly translate into their gameplay. Speaking of team chemistry, Coach Masson takes a comprehensive approach to building a strong team dynamic.
