A Resurgent Season: Coach Marcus Spivey and Central Gwinnett Basketball’s Winning Return

For Coach Marcus Spivey, the 2025 winter basketball season was more than a collection of wins—it was a cultural shift. Leading Central Gwinnett High School’s varsity basketball team, Coach Spivey guided his players to a season that broke long-standing records, reignited school spirit, and laid the foundation for a bright future.

A Year of Standouts

At the heart of Central Gwinnett’s success were a group of underclassmen whose performance and potential signaled a new era for the program. Josiah Hall, Brayden Holiday, and Denovian Flowers, all from the Class of 2026, were instrumental in the team’s offensive prowess. Josiah Hall, named to both the All-Region and All-County teams, averaged 14 points and 6 rebounds per game, emerging as a reliable scorer and rebounding presence. Brayden Holiday added 10 points per game, providing consistent production and floor leadership. Meanwhile, Denovian Flowers contributed 11 points per game, rounding out a trio that opposing defenses struggled to contain. On the other end of the court, Phil Howard anchored the team with tenacious defense, earning All-Region Defensive Team honors. His presence set the tone for a squad that prided itself on hustle, grit, and intensity.

Breaking Barriers: Most Wins in Nearly a Decade

The numbers tell the story of a season worth celebrating. Central Gwinnett finished with 15 wins, their highest total in nine years, and clinched third place in their region. Perhaps more importantly, the team secured a berth in the state playoffs for the first time in six years—a milestone that left a lasting impression on players, coaches, and fans alike. “This season was full of highlights,” said Coach Spivey. “Winning 15 games, making it to the state playoffs—those are accomplishments this group can be proud of.”

Rivalry Win Sparks Turning Point

While the win column was filled with memorable moments, Coach Spivey pointed to two particularly defining events in the season: a rivalry win and the long-awaited playoff berth. “Beating our rival and making the state playoffs—those were the turning points,” he noted. Rivalry games are always intense, but this victory seemed to galvanize the team and serve as proof that their hard work was paying off. From there, their confidence only grew.

Development That Matters

The progress made by Josiah Hall and Phil Howard stood out as the season unfolded. Both players not only improved statistically but also matured into larger roles—on and off the court. Hall, already a key scorer, developed into a leader who led by example with his effort and composure. Howard, meanwhile, evolved into a lockdown defender and vocal presence, helping orchestrate the team’s defensive schemes and mentoring younger players. “Their development throughout the season really made a difference,” said Coach Spivey. “They stepped up when it mattered most.”

Responding to Adversity

Though Coach Spivey didn’t detail specific injuries or losses, the team's success in reaching the playoffs after nearly a decade speaks volumes about their resilience. In high school basketball, maintaining focus and cohesion over the course of a long season is no easy feat—especially when navigating the pressure of making history. What stood out most was how the team embraced accountability, leaned on one another, and refused to let adversity derail their goals.

A Senior Class That Set the Tone

The role of the seniors on this year’s team cannot be overstated. While many programs rely on senior talent to carry them, Coach Spivey highlighted their leadership and mindset as their greatest contributions. “This senior class brought in the TEAM concept of winning and being part of a positive culture,” he said. They were the glue that held the squad together and the compass that guided the younger players through challenges. Their willingness to prioritize team success over personal accolades helped shape a culture that Coach Spivey hopes will carry forward in years to come.

A Promising Future

Looking ahead, the future of Central Gwinnett basketball is brighter than it’s been in years. “What excites me most is that the returning players now have experience—and they know what it takes to win,” said Coach Spivey. That experience, gained through both victories and challenges, is invaluable. With core contributors like Hall, Holiday, Flowers, and Howard expected to return, the team is positioned for even greater success next season.

Offseason Focus: Trust and Accountability

For all the progress made this year, Coach Spivey is far from satisfied. The offseason is already on his mind, and his focus is clear. “We need to be more accountable for each other and trust each other more,” he said. Chemistry, trust, and communication will be the pillars of their offseason development. With talent already in place, these intangible factors may be the difference between another strong season and a championship run.

Culture, Commitment, and Confidence

This season was more than a turnaround—it was a statement. Coach Marcus Spivey and his team didn’t just chase wins; they changed the narrative. From ending a playoff drought to redefining what it means to be a team, the 2025 Knights proved that with the right culture, anything is possible. The journey may have started with a few promising players, but it grew into something much larger. It became a movement of belief, fueled by discipline and driven by shared goals. With rising stars, a proven coach, and a locker room built on trust, Central Gwinnett’s basketball program is poised to remain a force for years to come.
