As the new season for Central High School's eSports team approaches, all eyes are on the team and its potential for success. After a strong performance last season, the team is eager to continue growing and improving in the world of competitive gaming. To get a better understanding of what we can expect from Central High's eSports team this year, we spoke with Coach Victoria Chavez-Herrera and got an inside look at the team's top returning players, new additions, and their goals for the season. Coach Chavez-Herrera emphasized the team's focus on growth, both in terms of quantity and quality. This means not only having a larger number of players but also creating a strong competitive culture within the team. The team's ultimate goal is to be an example of the potential opportunities that can come from eSports. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Chavez-Herrera mentioned the Overwatch Varsity team's star lineup of Amari Bryant (Captain), Elijah Hernandez, Riley Keele, Danny Garcia, and Elijah Ward. This team was a first-time competitor last season and made it far in the competition. They have been dedicated to off-season practices and are determined to bring home a trophy this year. But it's not just about individual talent on this team. Coach Chavez-Herrera stressed the importance of team chemistry and camaraderie. Returning players often recruit and bring newer players to the team, bringing a fresh competitive spirit and enthusiasm. The coach believes this is vital in keeping team morale high and ensuring success on the field. In terms of team captains, Coach Chavez-Herrera looks for several qualities including academic success, gaming skills, leadership skills, and past or current athletic commitments. Captains have a crucial role in setting the tone for the team, organizing practices and game reviews, and keeping morale high. They work closely with the coach to ensure the team is meeting its goals. But it's not all about skills and talent in the world of competitive gaming. The mental aspect of the game is just as important, if not more. Coach Chavez-Herrera stressed the importance of having a positive mindset and not tolerating negative talk towards teammates. She also mentioned that the team is intentional in planning times for team members to understand each other's backgrounds and bring different perspectives to the team. As with any team, there are challenges to overcome in preparing for the new season. For Central High's team, funding and equipment have been the biggest obstacles.
