With the start of a new season just around the corner, it's time to take a look at the Chaney High School baseball team and what we can expect from them this year. To get an inside perspective, we sat down with Coach Eric Gruber to get his take on the upcoming season. As with any team, there are always key players who contribute to the success of the team. For Chaney High School, Coach Gruber highlighted some of the top returning players from last season. Bobby Johnson, a senior who plays multiple positions including pitcher, shortstop, third base, and first base, is considered the heart of the team. His leadership and dedication serve as an example for the younger players. As a sophomore, Johnson also reached the 100-strikeout count faster than any other pitcher in Chaney's baseball history. Another standout returning player is Braydon Polk, a senior and the team's starting catcher for the past three years. His passion for the game is evident and he has developed into one of the best catchers in the area, earning praise from umpires and opposing coaches. Senior Danny Pagan Asceio, who plays pitcher and shortstop, has also shown growth and maturity as a player. According to Coach Gruber, Pagan Asceio brings an element of inspiration and motivation to the team with his constant communication and encouragement. DeShaun Langston, a senior who plays third base, is also expected to make a significant impact this season. Coach Gruber praises Langston for his fearlessness and strong arm, especially in his position at the "hot corner." Having gained experience in that position last season, Coach Gruber is excited to see how Langston will perform this time around. Aside from returning players, there are also new additions to the team who are expected to make an immediate impact. Freshman Porter Wilson, who plays pitcher and first base, comes from a solid baseball background and is already showing potential at the varsity level. Senior Erick Davis, who played for the team one season but had to sit out for personal reasons, is now back and is expected to bring his speed and skills to the outfield. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Gruber looks for players who possess certain qualities. He emphasizes the importance of leading by example and having a strong work ethic. Currently, there are no designated captains, but several players are battling for the role. This competition for leadership can only benefit the team in terms of motivation and drive. As with any team, there are always challenges to overcome in preparation for the season. For Chaney High School, one of the biggest challenges is the unpredictable weather in Northeast Ohio. With multiple practices being held indoors, Coach Gruber has had to get creative in keeping the players motivated. But through it all, he encourages his players to not settle and to constantly push themselves to be better. Looking at the team's schedule for the season, there are definitely some tough opponents to face. However, Coach Gruber sees it as an opportunity for growth and improvement. With the motto "Every pitch, every out, every inning," the team is reminded of the mental aspect of the game and the importance of moving on from mistakes and focusing on the next play. This mindset will surely be put to the test against tough opponents. In terms of changes or improvements made to the team's training and conditioning program, Coach Gruber emphasizes the mental aspect of the game. He believes that baseball is one of the toughest sports mentally, and his motto serves as a constant reminder to the players. The team also focuses on building endurance and improving overall strength and agility. With a strong core of returning players and new additions that are expected to make an immediate impact, the Chaney High School baseball team is geared up for a successful season. Coach Eric Gruber's emphasis on teamwork and constant improvement will surely play a crucial role in the team's success. As they take on tough opponents and face challenges, the team's goal remains the same - to not only have a winning season but to constantly improve and play as a cohesive unit.
