As the fall season approaches, the Cherokee High School cross-country team is gearing up for another exciting and competitive season. With a roster consisting of both experienced and new runners, the team is looking to make a mark in the upcoming meets and competitions. Coach Steve Shaklee, a seasoned coach with over two decades of experience, is confident in his team's abilities and the potential for success this year.
When asked about the top returning players, he mentions Liam Tindall as the standout. Tindall's impressive track record from last season, including a 4th-place finish at the SJ Group 4 Sectionals and a 15th-place finish at the Group 4 State Meet, makes him a formidable runner on the team. Coach Shaklee also praises Tindall's leadership skills and determination, which make him an invaluable asset to the team.
Other returning players to watch out for include sophomores Ben Realley and Sean Sooy, and seniors Ben Weiner, Anthony DiBattista, Enzo Corona, and Tate Midora. These runners, along with Tindall, were part of the team that placed 3rd at the Group 4 State Meet last year, and are expected to make significant contributions to the team this season.
In addition to these returning players, Coach Shaklee also has high expectations for incoming freshman, Jack Tindall, Liam's younger brother. Jack is set to make his varsity debut this season and is expected to have an immediate impact on the team. His addition to the roster only adds to the team's depth and potential for success.
The qualities Coach Shaklee looks for in potential team captains are discipline, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. This year's captains, Liam Tindall and Ben Weiner possess all these qualities and serve as role models for the rest of the team. Their leadership, along with their experience and dedication, will be crucial in promoting team chemistry and camaraderie.
To further encourage team bonding, the team will be taking an overnight trip to the RVA Relay Meet in Mechanicsville, VA, where they will also be competing. This trip, along with their week-long trip to RunningWorks Cross Country Camp this summer, will create a stronger bond among the teammates and help them work together towards their common goal. When it comes to motivating his players, Coach Shaklee believes in the importance of self-motivation.
