As the start of the high school baseball season approaches, fans of Chesterton High School are eagerly anticipating the performance of their team. With a strong mix of returning players and promising newcomers, the team has its sights set on competing in the Duneland Athletic Conference and making a deep run in the state tournament. In an exclusive interview, Coach John Bogner shared his thoughts on the team's top players, new additions, and preparations for the upcoming season.
One of the biggest strengths of the team this year is its returning players. Coach Bogner identified several key players who he believes will make a significant impact on the field. "We have a strong group of returning players who have already proven themselves on the field," he says. "They bring a combination of talent, experience, and leadership to the team."
Among the top returning players is junior Dylan Bradford, who will be a valuable addition to the pitching staff. "Dylan is a tough arm out of the bullpen and will be someone to watch this season," says Coach Bogner. Other standout players include Troy Barrett, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder who is known for his tenacity on the mound and in the batter's box, and Rob Czarniecki, an outfielder with impressive hitting and defensive skills.
In addition to these returning players, Coach Bogner has high hopes for the new additions to the team. "We have some talented newcomers who will make an immediate impact on the team," he says. One of these players is Caden Hackett, a sophomore catcher who Coach Bogner believes has the potential to be one of the best players in the area. "Caden started as a freshman and handled some tough games on our schedule. He is already proving himself to be a top player," says Coach Bogner.
When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Bogner looks for players who possess certain qualities both on and off the field. "Our captains are the ones who set the tempo for the team. They are leaders who push the team to be their best," he says. This year, the team will have multiple captains, as Coach Bogner believes that every player has the potential to be a leader. "We want to be a team of captains, not just a single one," he adds.
Building team chemistry and camaraderie is also a priority for Coach Bogner. He believes that a strong bond between players is crucial for success on the field. "Our captains play a big role in creating a positive atmosphere within the team. We also have a baseball study hall where the players can bond and help each other with schoolwork," he says. This emphasis on teamwork and support for one another helps to motivate the players to push themselves to their full potential.
As with any team, there are challenges to overcome in preparing for the season. For Coach Bogner and his team, the biggest challenge has been staying healthy and getting quality practice time. "We have had some players dealing with illnesses and injuries, so we have to make sure we are taking care of our bodies and getting in enough reps," he explains. However, the team remains focused and determined to overcome any obstacles in their way.
When it comes to the team's schedule, Coach Bogner acknowledges that they have some tough opponents ahead. "We have a challenging schedule, but we won't overlook any team. Our focus is on one game at a time," he says. The team is looking forward to facing tough competition and using those games to improve and prepare for the postseason.
Coach Bogner's coaching style is one that emphasizes hard work, discipline, and a strong mental game. "We want our players to be feisty, chippy, tough, and tenacious on the field," he says. "Off the field, we want them to be gentlemen, but when they step between the lines, they need to be ready to compete." He also stresses the importance of staying calm and collected during games, as he believes it can be just as effective as yelling and barking commands.
In terms of training and conditioning, the team has made some changes and improvements to their program. "We have added more mounds, pitching machines, tees, and other training tools in order to develop the skills we see as crucial to our success," says Coach Bogner. The team also has a daily success or failure test that incorporates consequences and rewards to keep the players motivated and focused on their training.
As for the team's strengths and weaknesses, Coach Bogner believes that their biggest strength is their work ethic and determination. "Our players have a strong desire to win and are willing to put in the work to achieve it," he says. As for weaknesses, Coach Bogner acknowledges that complacency can be an issue at times, but he is confident that the team's drive and motivation will help them overcome it.
In the end, Coach Bogner's coaching philosophy is centered around creating a team of hardworking and coachable players. "Our players want to work to win and they are always willing to listen and learn," he says. With a mix of talented returning players, promising new additions, and a strong emphasis on teamwork and determination, the Chesterton High School baseball team is poised for a successful season. Fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive performance from this dedicated group of players.
