As the high school basketball season approaches, fans are eager to see how their teams will perform on the court. For the Chiawana High School team, there is a lot of anticipation as they have a talented group of players returning this year. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Chad Herron to get a sneak peek into what we can expect from the team this season.
Coach Herron highlighted the top returning players from last season, including athletes such as Devin Davila, Messiah Guy, and Nano Contreras. He praised these players for their ability to “play the right way for each other” and stated that defense, rebounding, and shot selection will be key to their success. These players have already proven themselves on the court and their skills will be crucial in leading the team towards success this year.
However, the team is not solely reliant on returning players. Coach Herron mentioned some new additions to the team who he believes will make an immediate impact. These new players, including Gage Williams, Santana Sifuentes, Junior Heavens, Benji Larios, and Cody Iverson, have shown great leadership qualities and a love for the game.
They will certainly bring a fresh perspective and energy to the team. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Herron looks for players who are great representatives of the program, both on and off the court. He named several players who are currently captains or are battling for the role, including Athen Harris, Ender Douglass, Wade Woodard, and Messiah Guy.
These players not only demonstrate strong leadership skills but also exemplify the values and expectations set by the team. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial for the success of any team. Coach Herron highlighted the importance of having players who are great representatives of the program not just on the court, but also in the classroom and the community.
This creates a cohesive and supportive environment for the players to thrive in. Coach Herron believes that this team has an abundance of candidates who can help foster a strong team dynamic. As for motivating his players, Coach Herron will continue to build upon the foundation they established last winter and summer. With everyone returning, the team has a level of consistency that will push them to reach their full potential. The mindset of the players will also play a big role, as they need to raise their expectations and have the drive to rise to the occasion.
