As the new season approaches, fans and supporters of the Chowchilla Union High School basketball team are eager to see what the team has in store for this year. We had the opportunity to speak to Head Coach Brett Moglia about the team and what we can expect from them this season. Coach Moglia has been coaching the varsity team for the past three years and is excited to have a new JV coaching staff on board. He emphasized the importance of having a unified program, with one vision and goal, to build a strong future for the team. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Moglia mentioned the all-state players who played significant minutes during the team's playoff run. These players include Shalaya Moore, who will be shouldering a heavy workload as one of the 'bigs', and Bella Gonsalves, who is looking to showcase her shooting skills as she moves to the shooting guard position. Coach Moglia also highlighted the energy and intensity these players bring to the team, which will be crucial for a successful season. Team chemistry and camaraderie are important aspects of the team, and Coach Moglia has appointed Allison Marion and Jay-Jay Danieli as potential team captains. These players are expected to bring intensity, provide depth, and bring the team together. Heaven Moore is also expected to shine as a force in the middle. Coaching a team to their full potential requires motivation, and Coach Moglia shared how he plans to push his players to give their best. He mentioned the team's multi-sport athletes who have had successful runs in other sports, which delayed their start on the basketball court. However, this has also helped in building chemistry quickly. The team is also planning a mid-season team retreat to help them further bond and prepare for a strong playoff run. As with every season, there are challenges and obstacles to overcome. For Coach Moglia and his team, the biggest challenge has been implementing various offensive and defensive strategies, and finding the right players for each role. However, the players are academically strong and self-disciplined, making the transition smoother. Speaking of the team's schedule, Coach Moglia mentioned tough opponents like Caruthers, the reigning Div III State Champions, and Sierra. However, the team will also be playing against several Div II teams in pre-league tournaments, including Kerman.
