The Clay Center High School baseball team is gearing up for a new season, and Coach Andy Bent is ready to lead them to success. With high expectations and a strong core of returning players, the team is looking to make a statement on the field. I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Bent about the upcoming season and get a preview of what fans can expect from the Tigers this year. One of the biggest strengths for the team this season is their returning players. According to Coach Bent, the top returning players from last season are Connor Metzger, Kainen Gifford, and Ben Pohlman. These players have been with the team for several years and have proven themselves to be valuable assets on the field. Coach Bent praised their commitment and hard work, stating that they are “always trying to win every game, league, regionals, and state.” But it’s not just the returning players who will make an impact this season. Coach Bent also highlighted three new players who he believes will contribute right away – Cole Pladson, Colten Tadtman, and Isaac Berggren. These players have all been playing baseball for a long time and possess strong leadership qualities. Coach Bent is confident that they will fit in well with the team and help to continue their winning culture. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Bent looks for players who possess certain qualities. He wants players who are not only skilled on the field but also have good character and are willing to lead by example. While the team does not have specific captains this year, Coach Bent believes that the older players on the team will naturally step up and take on leadership roles. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial for any successful team. Coach Bent is aware of this and plans on implementing team-building activities and fostering a positive team culture. With a small team of only 12 players, they will be spending a lot of time together, which will help to strengthen their bond. Coach Bent also believes that facing mental challenges together will make them stronger and united as a team. Motivation is another key factor in pushing players to reach their full potential. Coach Bent understands this and has high expectations for his team. He believes that by setting the bar high, the players will be motivated to work hard and push themselves to be the best they can be. Additionally, the team’s small size means that every player will have an important role to play, which can also serve as motivation to give their all on the field. As with any team, there have been challenges in preparing for this season. Coach Bent acknowledges that the team’s small numbers may pose a challenge, especially since they do not have a JV team for younger players to gain experience before playing at the varsity level. However, Coach Bent and his team are determined to overcome this obstacle and prove that they can compete with any team, regardless of their size. The team’s schedule for this season is a tough one, with several powerhouse teams on the roster. They will be facing teams like Hayden, Rock Creek, and Tonganoxie in a tournament, as well as playing against Buhler and hosting Hays. Coach Bent also mentioned that the team always looks forward to playing against Abilene and Wamego. With such a challenging schedule, the team will have to bring their A-game every time they step on the field. When it comes to coaching style, Coach Bent’s philosophy remains the same – to have high expectations for his team and never lower them. He believes that this is the best way to push his players to become better and achieve their full potential. He also emphasized the importance of mental toughness training, which the team undergoes for a couple of weeks before the season starts. This prepares them for the mental challenges they may face on the field and helps to build a strong team dynamic. In terms of training and conditioning, Coach Bent and his coaching staff have made significant improvements. The team goes through rigorous training to improve their physical and mental strength. This is essential in a sport like baseball, where stamina and focus are crucial for success. As for the team’s strengths and weaknesses, Coach Bent believes that their pitching and defense are their biggest strengths. They have a solid group of pitchers who can keep the opposing team’s runs to a minimum. However, their weakness may be in producing enough runs. Coach Bent and his coaching staff are working on improving their offensive game to complement their strong pitching and defense. Overall, Coach Bent and the Clay Center High School baseball team are ready to take on the upcoming season. With high expectations, a strong core of returning players, and a group of new players ready to make an impact, the Tigers are poised for success. The team’s dedication, hard work, and positive team culture will be vital in achieving their goals of winning league, regionals, and state. Fans should keep an eye on this talented and determined team as they take the field this season.
