As the upcoming high school basketball season approaches, the Clinton High School varsity team is gearing up for what could be a promising and exciting year. Head coach Josh Williams sat down with us to discuss the team's preparation, goals, and expectations for the upcoming season. Williams is entering his third year as the head coach of the Clinton Maroons and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team.
He has high expectations for his team this year and is confident that they have what it takes to compete at a high level. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Williams immediately mentioned Clara Dempsey, Carly Anderson, and Regan Filkin. These players have proven themselves to be valuable assets to the team with their skills on the court and their leadership off the court.
Junior Clara Dempsey has been a standout player for the Maroons since her freshman year. She is a 2-time 1st-team all-conference selection and is known for her scoring abilities at all three levels. Williams also praises her for her ability to get her teammates involved in the offense, making her a well-rounded player. Carly Anderson, another junior, is expected to be one of the most dynamic scorers in Central Illinois this year.
She has a reputation for her incredible range and has added a new driving game to her arsenal. Williams believes that she will be a key player on the team this year. Senior Regan Filkin is on track to reach 1,000 points in her career and is a force to be reckoned with on the court. She can create scoring opportunities not only for herself but also for her teammates.
Williams describes her as a tough and skilled player who will be crucial to the team's success this season. But it's not just about the returning players, as Williams also has high hopes for two freshmen, Karlie Bless and Ozzie Goar. He believes that they both have the potential to contribute significantly to the team and give quality minutes off the bench.
When it comes to choosing team captains, Williams looks for players who possess certain qualities such as leadership, dedication, and a strong work ethic. He also believes that communication and chemistry are essential for a successful team. As for who will take on the role of captain this season, Williams says it will be a decision made collectively by players and coaches. To push his players to reach their full potential, Williams focuses on building team camaraderie and positive team culture.
