Coconino High Golf: Building Through the Elements and Eyeing a Big Season Offseason Focus: Year-Round Golf, Rain or Shine In Flagstaff, offseason golf training can be a challenge due to unpredictable weather. To address this, the Coconino golf team invested in a golf simulator, allowing players to practice year-round indoors. “The main focus this offseason has been simply getting time to play,” says Coach Parsons. “We wanted to give our players the opportunity to improve even when the weather didn’t cooperate.” Roster Updates: New Roles and Senior Leadership The team graduated three seniors last year, all regulars in the varsity top five. This season, senior leadership returns in the form of Luke Eden, Colin Peace, and Wes Loxley. Eden has been a consistent performer since his sophomore year, Peace brings experience from key matches, and Loxley is stepping into a bigger role after picking up the game less than a year ago. Players to Watch: Hungry for State Jazmine Boyce – Junior standout who qualified for state last season and is hungry for another run. Luke Eden – Senior returning after missing the state cut by less than a stroke—he’s back with something to prove. Karsten McCain – Junior and rising competitor who just missed a state appearance last season and is poised for a breakthrough. These athletes have shown relentless effort during the offseason, both in simulator training and fitness development, to push their game to the next level. Strength & Fitness: Tailored Training for Golfers Once a week, the team works with the school’s strength and conditioning coach, who has developed a golf-specific training program. These sessions focus on building the balance, flexibility, and rotational power needed for competitive golf while promoting injury prevention. Coaching Strategy: Expanding to Grow the Game With only two coaches managing boys varsity, girls varsity, and JV teams, the staff has been stretched thin. “There’s been growing interest in youth golf across Flagstaff,” said Coach Parsons. “We’ve had a few people express interest in helping, which would be a huge step in giving our kids the attention they deserve.” The coaching team remains focused on developing younger athletes while maintaining competitiveness at the varsity level. Challenges Ahead: Depth & Weather Key challenges for the Panthers include: Maintaining depth following the departure of senior leaders Continuing development of less experienced golfers Overcoming the weather, which limits outdoor play time and forces creative offseason planning But with a tight-knit senior group, rising underclassmen, and a more robust support staff in the works, the future looks bright for Coconino golf.
