The 2024–25 season will go down as a transformational one for Combs High School Girls Basketball. Under the leadership of Head Coach Heidi Bush, the Coyotes went from winless in regional play a year ago to a 13–9 finish and second place in their region—a historic turnaround built on grit, team chemistry, and buy-in from a determined group of athletes.
A True Team Effort
“This was hands down my favorite season I’ve ever coached,” said Coach Bush—and it’s easy to see why. The team featured numerous standout contributors:
Heather Jo Bush, a fierce competitor, led the team in rebounding despite playing the guard position. She was also deadly from three and locked down opponents on defense.
Cherish Jones emerged as the team’s defensive engine, leading in steals and bringing relentless energy every night.
In the paint, the senior duo of Avery and Celyn dominated. Their shot-blocking presence not only led the region but also set the tone for Combs' defense.
Captains Jazelle and Jalynn anchored the team emotionally and mentally, keeping the squad united, focused, and ready to compete.
And freshman phenom Ambriah Lujan announced herself as the future of the program with dazzling ball-handling and an aggressive mindset that made her a scoring threat from day one.
Season Highlights
What started as a challenging season quickly turned into a story of resilience and revival. “The biggest highlight was watching the team grow,” Coach Bush said. “We passed up good shots for great ones, pushed in transition, and let our defense fuel our offense.” A few early region wins marked a turning point, boosting team confidence and launching a strong second half of the season.
Player Development and Growth
No player embodied the growth mindset more than Ambriah Lujan, who matured with every game, showing poise under pressure well beyond her years. Meanwhile, Cherish stepped into a clear leadership role, and Avery and Celyn elevated their play to become consistent game-changers.
Responding to Adversity
Combs faced early-season adversity with the heart of a champion. Despite injuries and tough losses, the team never wavered. “They stayed positive, stayed focused, and leaned on each other,” said Coach Bush. “That resilience defined our season.”
A Legacy Senior Class
The impact of this year’s senior class cannot be overstated. “Six strong leaders changed the culture of our team,” Coach Bush emphasized. They led by example and created a legacy that will influence future Combs teams for years to come.
The Future Looks Bright
With a promising young core returning, led by Lujan, and a renewed sense of purpose, Coach Bush is optimistic. “The culture these seniors built will carry on, and we’re just getting started.”
Offseason Goals
This offseason, the focus shifts to tightening execution: reducing turnovers, improving decision-making, rebounding more consistently, and locking in at the free-throw line. “We want to sharpen the details that separate good teams from great ones,” Bush said.
