After graduating a powerhouse senior class—eight D1-bound athletes—the Cornerstone Christian volleyball program enters a new chapter, centered around youth, chemistry, and promise. “Our focus this offseason has been team chemistry,” says Head Coach Mike Carter. “With so many new faces, building trust and connection on and off the court is key.” Offseason Goals & Growth The biggest offseason emphasis? Earning an open bid to Nationals. The team will host its team camp in July, giving this fresh lineup valuable reps and bonding time. And while the roster has changed dramatically, the hunger to compete at a national level hasn’t. Roster Shake-Up Eight D1 seniors are out, but there is exciting new talent in. Several varsity-experienced players with ties to USA Volleyball’s National Team Development Program are stepping into the spotlight. Coach Carter has a keen eye for talent, and the young guns are ready to rise. Players to Watch Sydney Whisenton (’28) – Setter/OH and Texas Volleyball Insider’s Freshman of the Year Cayleigh Cervenka (’26) – MB/OH (committed to Air Force Academy) Sara Gonzales (’28) – Libero Charlie George (’28) – OH Brooke Oney (’28) – OH Senala Thomas (’28) – MB/OH The Class of ’28 is packed with energy, skill, and potential, making them one of the most exciting youth groups in the state. Training & Fitness This offseason, the team is zeroing in on functional strength training and vertical development, which are critical areas for elite-level play. First contact—serve, serve, receive, dig to kill—is the strategic heartbeat of their training approach. On the Road Again Cornerstone volleyball’s calendar is stacked. From Hawaii to Las Vegas to Gainesville, the squad is prepping for tournaments across the country. To support their travel goals, the team is organizing its annual fundraiser, strengthening ties with its loyal community and fans. Challenges Ahead With youth comes growing pains. Coach Carter is tasked with balancing training intensity, travel schedules, and development pacing. But if any program is built to reload instead of rebuild, it’s Cornerstone.
