Crean Lutheran High School’s girls' flag football team is making the most of its offseason, focusing on growth, development, and preparing for what promises to be one of their most competitive seasons yet. Head Coach Mike Shumaker has emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation through skills development, particularly at the JV and Frosh/Soph levels. “A healthy lower-level program makes a healthy varsity program,” he noted, highlighting the team’s long-term vision.
A standout feature of this offseason has been the team’s impressive involvement in club football. Many players, across all levels, are participating in the Showdown Series Spring League at El Toro High School. Crean Lutheran has fielded three teams in the league, with around 40 players suiting up, demonstrating both depth and dedication.
While the Saints will be graduating standout senior Olivia Green (105 receptions) and defensive leader Peyton Downs, the team remains optimistic. Offensive contributions are expected from Grace Nichol, Izzy DeSantis, and Taylor Cain, who are ready to step into larger roles. Defensively, Crean Lutheran boasts a deep pool of talent ready to rise to the challenge.
Among the returning and emerging stars, keep an eye on Ally Schmida, Haley McIlroy, and sophomore Ellie Hordyk, who led the team in total yards last season. Junior Rian Gaeta is expected to shine with a full season at outside linebacker, and Coach Shumaker is especially excited about Taylor Cain, calling her “poised to have a breakout season for the ages.”
While training continues, the coaching staff is also waiting to see whether major rule changes will be implemented for the upcoming season, adjustments that could significantly impact strategies and gameplay. And with the Crestview League expanding to include Canyon and Sonora, the Saints are preparing for what Coach Shumaker believes will be “one of the top 5 toughest leagues in the Southern Section.”
With strong participation, a talented returning core, and a pipeline of developing players, Crean Lutheran’s girls' flag football team is not just reloading—they’re ready to compete.
