As the new season approaches, fans and supporters of Crook County High School's girls' basketball team are eager to see what the team has in store. And who better to give us a preview than Coach Bob Boback, who has been coaching girls' basketball for 22 years? When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Boback immediately mentioned Anna Bales, a sophomore who made quite an impact during her freshman year. Bales was named 1st Team all-league and honorable mention all-state and broke six team records. "She could be the best point guard I have coached," says Coach Boback. Bales' quickness, agility, and skill on both ends of the court make her a special player to watch out for. But Bales is not the only one to keep an eye on this season. Coach Boback also mentioned junior Kacy Wiederholt and Harper Smith as top returning players. Wiederholt, a two-year starter, is known for her sharpshooting and tough defense, while Smith's speed and aggressiveness make her a valuable asset on the team's press defense. In terms of new players who will make an immediate impact, Coach Boback has high expectations for freshman Hayden Decker. With a well-rounded game and potential to play as a post player, Decker will be a valuable addition to the team. Alongside Decker, Coach Boback will be relying on Bales to lead the team on the court, as well as Emily Henderson, a senior who has patiently waited her turn and has worked hard on improving her shot. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Boback looks for players who can lead by example, have confidence in addressing issues, and communicate well with him. This season, he has his eyes on Emily Henderson, Anna Bales, and Chloe McKenzie to fill this role. Team chemistry and camaraderie are crucial for a successful season, and Coach Boback plans to foster this through team bonding activities and overnight trips. The team has three overnight trips planned, including a Christmas tournament in Ketchikan, Alaska, where they will have the opportunity to bond and build chemistry on and off the court. When it comes to motivating his players, Coach Boback takes a fun and inclusive approach. He plans to keep the practices lively and enjoyable, with music blasting in the background.
