Season Overview: A Championship 33 Years in the Making The Crook County High School girls basketball team made history this season, turning a challenging 5-9 non-league start into a remarkable run of 11 straight wins to claim the program’s first league championship since 1992. Head Coach Bobby Boback described it simply: “Great season!!” This turnaround was more than just wins—it was a testament to heart, unity, and resilience. True Team Effort The strength of this team was in its balance. All five starters shared the scoring load almost equally, with averages of 7.5, 7.3, 7.1, 7.0, and 5.5 points per game. “We had five starters that all sacrificed for each other,” said Coach Boback. “It wasn’t about individual stats—it was about doing whatever it took to win.” Adapting Through Adversity Just two games into the season, Crook County lost its standout point guard—arguably the best in the state—to injury. Ten games in, their key sixth player was also sidelined. Both suffered season-ending surgeries. Instead of folding, the team adapted: Redesigned offensive and defensive schemes Rebuilt their press and press brake Maintained an aggressive, tough identity despite undersized lineups “We were 5’6 across the board, and one starter at 5’2—but we were fast, tough, and played special zones,” Boback said. Standouts and Breakthroughs Development was key this season, with two freshmen, two juniors, and one senior stepping into bigger roles as the year progressed. Their growth helped fuel the team’s second-half surge. Senior Leadership Crook County's two senior starters served as captains and emotional leaders. Their maturity and commitment anchored the team through adversity and helped guide the younger players on and off the court. Looking Ahead: A Bright Future With three starters returning and the hope of two injured players making full recoveries, Coach Boback is optimistic. “Add in a promising incoming freshman class, and we could be very good next season.” Offseason Goals This offseason, the focus is clear: Improve individual skills Build off-season commitment and chemistry Continue growing a defense-first, team-oriented identity Winning with Grit, Not Stats Despite some rough numbers—30.5% FG, 22.6% from 3-point range, and 49.3% from the free-throw line, along with 22.1 turnovers per game—the Cowgirls never let those stats define them. “Our stats weren’t ‘winning team’ stats. But our defense, heart, and toughness? That’s what made us special.”
