Crystal City Volleyball Targets Defensive Strength as Senior Leaders Return Offseason Focus: Building a Defensive Wall Crystal City enters the offseason with a sharp focus on serve receive and defensive consistency. Head Coach Cris Tapia emphasized that sharpening these foundational skills will be crucial to creating more offensive opportunities. “The goal is to be defensively strong so we can offer our offense more opportunities to score,” Tapia said. Senior Leadership and Rising Talent The backbone of this year’s squad will be a battle-tested senior class that has steadily contributed to the program’s growth and success. Key returning players include: Alyson Mata, Elaina Lira, and Izabela Tapia – Offensive standouts who have been instrumental in generating points. Alyssa Flores and Angela Luna – Defensive anchors known for their consistency and reliability in the backcourt. Also making waves in offseason training are Analyssa Lazcano (Sophomore) and Iliana Ibarra (Junior), both of whom are showing impressive progress during open gyms and club competition. Their energy and effort suggest they could be impactful players this fall. Coaching Philosophy: Competition Breeds Excellence The coaching staff is doubling down on competitive training. “Our staff will continue to challenge our players through competitive practices that help develop well-rounded athletes,” said Coach Tapia. The emphasis is on versatility, accountability, and high-level competition, all designed to prepare the team to meet the demands of a rigorous season. The Road Ahead: Embracing the Challenge With a veteran core and emerging young talent, Crystal City is positioned to be competitive in their district. However, Coach Tapia notes that the biggest challenges this season will come from maintaining consistent defensive performance and adapting to any roster shifts as the season unfolds.
