As the Cypress High School basketball team gears up for the upcoming season, Coach Derek Mitchell is confident that they have the talent and determination to be competitive in every game. The team boasts a strong core group of returning players who know how to work hard and play for each other. Looking at last season's top performers, it's no surprise that they will be leading the team once again.
Point guard Ryan Gov, who was named 3rd team All Orange County and 1st team All-Empire League, is a critical decision-maker and shot-maker on the court. King Birdsong, a two-way player and one of the best shooters in the area, was named 2nd team All-Empire League. Hayden Roberts, who can play all positions on the court, is known as the "glue guy" who does everything for the team.
Jackson Houston, an honorable mention All-Empire League player and team captain, is a constant leader on the court and is tough to guard due to his constant movement. Isaac Vergara, the team's best defensive player, is crucial to their success. Lastly, JoJo Hall Deans, another team captain who puts the team first, and Grant Roberts, known for his excellent defensive skills and energy on the court, round out the team's impressive returning players.
When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Mitchell looks for players who are respected by their peers and can lead by example. This year, the team captains are Jackson Houston, JoJo Hall Deans, and Ryan Gov. However, there are also two new additions to the team, Gavin Kroll, and Emmanuel Igbekoyi, who are both 6'6" tall and are expected to make a significant impact with their height and skills.
To build team chemistry and camaraderie, the team has been playing together since elementary school, and their bond and chemistry will undoubtedly be an advantage on the court. Additionally, the coaching staff takes the team on out-of-town trips during the summer to build relationships and allow new players to integrate with their teammates.
Coach Mitchell's motto for the team is to strive to be the best in every aspect of the game, from defense to rebounding. Their biggest challenge this season will be acclimating to their new league, The Crestview League, which is one of the toughest in Southern California.
