The Dallastown High School track and field team is gearing up for another exciting and successful season. With two consecutive YAIAA Championships under their belt, the team is hungry for a third and both the boys and girls teams have their sights set on achieving this goal. Coach Neil Gutekunst sat down with us to give us a preview of what to expect from the team this year. One of the biggest strengths of the team this year is the returning players from last season. Coach Gutekunst highlighted a long list of top performers who will be back on the track this year. These athletes include Gabriel Annan, Morgan Good, Neila Granger, Christian Rodriguez, Jacob Roskovensky, Olivia Cleaver, Christopher Cromartie, Addison Emenheiser, Matthew Muniz, Aldo Alfaro Cruz, Olivia Craig, Alonna Dowell, Natalie Good, Brooklyn Gore, Aiden Granger, and Ethan Jacobs. The 4x800 Relay team of Ememheiser, M. Good, N. Granger, and N. Good also placed 5th in the state last year and all members are returning this season. These athletes have proven themselves to be hard workers and leaders, playing a major role in the team's previous Championship victories. It's clear that their determination and talent will be vital to the team's success this year as well. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Gutekunst looks for certain qualities in potential leaders. He values athletes who are self-motivated and dedicated to improving themselves and the team. This year, Leah Navarro and Molly McLaughlin are both standout athletes who are expected to have a strong season. Navarro placed 3rd in the AAA State Championships in Cross Country this past fall, while McLaughlin has had an impressive indoor season in the sprint events. Both of these athletes exhibit the qualities that make them great candidates for team captains, and they will be instrumental in leading the team to victory this year. As with any sport, there are always challenges that come with preparing for a new season. For the Dallastown track and field team, one of the biggest challenges is making sure their top athletes don't over-train. Coach Gutekunst understands the importance of balancing hard work and rest, and he is committed to ensuring that his athletes are in top physical and mental shape for competition. The team's schedule for this season is also a topic of interest. However, the harsh winter weather has made it difficult for the team to get outside for practice. Despite this challenge, the team is still determined to have a successful season. The first meet of the season will be against Southwestern, a team known for their strength and consistent performance. This will be a tough competition for the Dallastown team, but they are excited about the challenge and are looking forward to seeing their hard work pay off. When it comes to coaching style, Coach Gutekunst acknowledges that it may differ from previous seasons. As a coach, he continuously evaluates and adjusts his techniques to best fit the needs of each new group of athletes. This year, he plans to focus on the team's strengths, particularly the girls' distance squad. However, he also recognizes the importance of keeping an open mind and being flexible in order to bring out the best in each individual athlete. Overall, Coach Gutekunst's coaching philosophy is centered around creating a positive and supportive team environment. He believes in building a strong foundation of hard work, discipline, and dedication, but also values having fun and enjoying the sport. This philosophy is reflected in the team's gameplay as they work together to achieve their goals while also maintaining a positive and supportive atmosphere. In conclusion, the Dallastown High School track and field team is ready to take on the challenges of a new season. With a strong group of returning players and dedicated coaches, they are determined to continue their winning streak and bring home another YAIAA Championship. Keep an eye out for these talented athletes as they hit the track and showcase their skills and determination. Go Wildcats!
