After a season of positive strides, Durango Football is charging into the offseason with one major goal: growth. Coach Robert Cutts and his staff are working to elevate the program, continuing the success that began last fall and setting the stage for something even bigger. Offseason Focus: Continue to Build “Our main focus this offseason is to grow as a program,” said Coach Cutts. With recent success as a foundation, the Trailblazers are now looking to raise expectations and develop a winning culture across the board. Camps and Competitions: Putting in the Reps Durango has been busy this offseason. The team competed in the Southern Nevada Coaches Association 7-on-7 league this winter and will suit up again in the UNLV 7-on-7 tournament and the Raiders 11-ON tournament. These events aren’t just about reps—they’re about bonding, competing, and growing confidence. Notable Additions & Roster Updates Kanye Lopez: A rising junior with a standout JV season, Kanye is poised to make an impact as a second RB and starting OLB. Marquise Edmond: A transfer WR from Lincoln High in San Diego, Marquise brings explosive potential to the offense. Ammir Aziz: A new addition to the coaching staff, Aziz returns to his roots. A Durango alum and former UNLV defensive lineman, he joins as the new DL coach, bringing toughness, experience, and passion. Players to Watch Takoda Bliss (DE, Junior): A varsity starter since freshman year, Bliss is a physical force at 6’2", 230 lbs. He notched 91 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 punt block last season. Makai Miller (RB, Junior): The returning starter racked up 900 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. Expect even more from him this year. Maddex Peterson (QB, Junior): After a promising start, Peterson’s 2024 season was cut short by injury in Game 2. With a clean slate, he’s ready to lead the offense and fulfill his breakout potential. Coaching Strategy & Preparation With both coordinators entering Year 2, the team is gaining stability and depth: Jeremy Stiles (Offensive Coordinator) is implementing his system more fully this offseason, with tweaks to fit the team’s strengths. Chace Traasdahl (Defensive Coordinator) faces the challenge of replacing eight defensive starters, but early signs suggest strong development from the new group. Biggest Challenges Ahead Durango is set to face a major test early: their first out-of-state game in years, traveling to take on Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho, in Week 3. “It’s the first one under my tenure as head coach,” said Cutts, and a key milestone for the program. Beyond that, the bigger mission is cultural: “Learning to be successful—and expecting it,” Cutts emphasized. With talented returners, key new faces, and an energized coaching staff, Durango is no longer just building. They're preparing to break through.
