The Edinburg High School basketball team is poised for another successful season under the leadership of Coach Rashawn Jones. With a strong focus on building relationships and developing well-rounded young men, Coach Jones and his team are looking to continue the growth of Edinburg Basketball on and off the court.
Last season, the team showed their ability to score, but this year they will be putting a greater emphasis on pressure defense. The team will be anchored by a group of talented and dedicated returning players, along with some new additions who are expected to make an immediate impact. The top returning players that have caught the attention of Coach Jones include Treyton Davis, Ian Dial, and Alex Peacock.
Davis, the floor general, has a high basketball IQ and the ability to read the floor. He is also a strong shooter, making him a valuable asset to the team. Dial, who experienced his first taste of varsity basketball last season, is known for his shooting and driving abilities, but also for his tenacious defense. Peacock, a four-year varsity starter, has already scored over 1000 points in his high school career and is a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court.
When it comes to potential team captains, Coach Jones looks for a mix of qualities in his players. He believes it is important to have a vocal leader, a player who gives 110% on and off the court, and a spark plug who can motivate and inspire the team. This year, those roles will be filled by Treyton Davis, Alex Peacock, and Finn Swinger.
In order to foster team chemistry and camaraderie, the team does a lot of bonding activities such as 2k tournaments, dinners, bonfires, and bag tournaments. They also have team breakfasts organized by the varsity captains, where the players can spend time together and build relationships outside of basketball.
As for motivation, Coach Jones believes in reminding his players of the goals they set at the beginning of the season and the bigger picture of playing for something greater than themselves. He also credits the leadership of the team captains for motivating and pushing their teammates to reach their full potential.
One of the biggest challenges in preparing for this season has been adjusting to the changes in the team's lineup. With a focus on pressure defense, the team has had to adjust its strategy and coaching approach from the previous season.
