El Capitan High School's basketball team is gearing up for an exciting and promising season. With experienced and talented players returning and new additions to the team, coach Dylan Curtis and his team have high hopes for winning the league and CIF titles and even making it to the state playoffs. Leading the team this year will be four 4-year starters who have played together since the 5th grade.
These players have a strong bond and understanding of each other's playing styles, making them a formidable force on the court. They include Keira Heinricy, a junior who holds the school record for 3-pointers in a season, Paige Worthem, a dominant 6'2 senior who excels in both scoring and assisting, Emily Sample, a 4-year starting point guard known for her stellar assists, and Lilly Williams, a senior who is rebound-hungry and plays physical inside the paint.
As for new players who will make an immediate impact on the team, there are several names to watch out for. Sophomore Sasha Parker brings a huge motor to the team, with her ability to get to the rim and defend. The team also has two talented freshmen, Elena Seeno and Kennedy O'Neil, joining them, a future addition to the team.
For Coach Curtis, the qualities he looks for in potential team captains are those who have a huge impact on and off the court. They must be able to hold teammates accountable, lead by example, and bring energy every day. This year, he has chosen 13 captains, each with a vital role in the team's success. To build team chemistry and camaraderie, Curtis stresses the importance of giving everyone a voice and recognizing their contributions.
Leaders are not decided based on a battle for a role, but rather earned through respect from teammates and coaches. This mentality extends to motivating players to push themselves to their fullest potential. The seniors, who dictate the team's culture, have a crucial role in pushing the team to success.
The biggest challenge the team has faced in preparing for this season is adjusting to a tough schedule with 11 Division 1 matchups, including top teams such as Carlsbad, San Marcos, and Torrey Pines. Despite this, the team remains focused on its ultimate goal and uses each game as an opportunity to improve.
