The El Diamante High School girls' basketball team has high hopes and big goals for this season. Coach Jessica Cervantes is leading the team with a strong vision and a focus on teamwork, hard work, and dedication. In a recent interview, Coach Cervantes shared her thoughts and insights about the upcoming season, the team's key players, and the strategies she plans to implement to lead the team to success.
The overall goals for the team this season are nothing short of impressive. Coach Cervantes and her team are aiming to compete for a league title and make a strong showing in the playoffs. They want to go beyond just making it to round two and actually win when they get there. This is an ambitious goal, but one that the team is fully committed to achieving.
One of the key factors that Coach Cervantes believes will contribute to the team's success is the players' complete buy-in and trust in the process. This means that every player must believe in themselves and their teammates and work together towards getting 1% better every day. This focus on continuous improvement is crucial in a sport as competitive as basketball, and Coach Cervantes is instilling this mentality in her team from the very beginning.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Cervantes highlighted the following players – senior Reyna Soto, senior Nevaeh Creason, sophomore Angelina Morales, senior Olivia Torres, and junior Mia Olson. Each of these players brings a unique set of skills and qualities to the team. Reyna Soto is known for her go-getter attitude and her ability to excel on both ends of the court.
Nevaeh Creason is a great leader and has a strong basketball IQ. Angelina Morales is an explosive player on both offense and defense. Olivia Torres is a deadly 3-point shooter who is always eager to fine-tune her skills and improve. And Mia Olson is already making a big impact this season, stepping up to play any position needed. What makes these players even more special is their commitment to the team.
Due to COVID-19, they were unable to play any games during their freshman year. However, they showed up to every practice and put in the work without complaining, rain or shine. Their dedication and determination set them apart from others and make them valuable assets to the team.
