As the start of the high school baseball season approaches, fans of Father Lopez High School are eager to see what the team has in store. We sat down with Coach Bob King to get a preview of this year's team and what fans can expect to see on the field. Coach King named several key returning players from last season who will be crucial to the team's success this year. One standout is senior Kenton Harrison, who was last year's MVP and #1 pitcher. Harrison is known for his solid hitting and impressive baserunning skills. Another key returner is senior Will Grim, who leads the defense at shortstop and is a speedy and intelligent baserunner. Sophomore Westen Brownlee, who was the team's leading hitter last year as a freshman, also brings his skills to the plate. In addition to his hitting, Brownlee is a great centerfielder and may see some time on the mound and in the infield this season. Sophomore Aaden Shaw, who saw significant action last year as a pitcher and catcher, adds another left-handed bat to the lineup. When it comes to new players who will make an immediate impact, Coach King highlighted two freshmen outfielders, Jason Bruce and Kyle Lansing. Both are known for their speed and will see plenty of action in the outfield and on the mound. Another talented freshman, Liam McKinley, can play any position on the field and is an impressive hitter with above-average speed. Coach King also mentioned the hard work and potential of several other freshmen and sophomores on the team. But it's not just about talent on the field for Coach King. He also emphasized the importance of motivation and pushing players to reach their full potential. He believes that the key to success is for players to come to practice every day with the goal of improving individually and as a team. This mindset, combined with a tough schedule, will help the team prepare for a realistic run at a district title. Speaking of the schedule, Coach King described it as "really difficult." The team will face many large schools and perennial baseball powers, which will provide a great test for the players. One game that Coach King is particularly looking forward to is against Winter Park High School, where he spent 32 years of his coaching career. However, he recognizes that the condensed schedule and lack of pitching depth may present a challenge for the team. When asked about his coaching philosophy, Coach King emphasized the team's athleticism and versatility as their strength. With only three upperclassmen on the team, the youth of the players may be seen as a weakness. However, Coach King sees this as an opportunity to build a strong program with a group of talented young players. Overall, Coach King is excited about this year's team and the potential they have to grow and improve. He believes that the mix of players, with a majority being freshmen and sophomores, will only help with team chemistry. And with a focus on hard work and improvement, the team is ready to take on any challenge that comes their way this season. Fans of Father Lopez High School baseball have a lot to look forward to this year, as the team aims for a district title and beyond.
