Francis Howell Boys Soccer: Rebuilding, Reloading, and Ready to Compete
A Customized Approach to Offseason Development
While many programs follow a single blueprint, Francis Howell High School's soccer program is tailoring its offseason with a player-specific development plan. Each athlete is focusing on personal growth—whether it's improving footwork and technique, sharpening decision-making in match-like scenarios, or boosting physical performance through agility and strength work.
“It’s all individualized,” said Head Coach Michael Enright. “Everyone has their own path to get better, and we’re supporting each one.”
Summer Camps & STL Friendlies Set the Tone
The team will participate in the STL VSS in July, host their own camp on campus, and take part in friendly matches against top St. Louis area schools throughout June and July. These experiences not only elevate play but also strengthen team chemistry ahead of a competitive fall season.
Replacing Experience with Depth and Hunger
Francis Howell will graduate four starters, including standout goalkeeper Will Winkler and defensive anchors Brock Karstens and Leo Humbert. But the cupboard is far from bare.
“We’re excited about guys like Bradley Flick stepping into goal, and hopeful that new face Patrick Longo can make a big impact in the midfield,” Enright shared.
Players to Watch in 2025
Returning all-conference standouts like outside back Rhett Lederle, attacking midfielder Adel Abudayeh, and forwards Owen Martin and Laird Van Sciever will anchor the squad.
Key returners include:
Defenders: Luke Bange, Braden Hoth, Alex Schwartz, Mason Fitzgerald, Luke Lilledahl, Ayden Reyling
Midfielders: Brady Tipton, Ben Scheller, Jack Clayton
Winger: Brody Massey
There’s also a wave of rising talent from the JV ranks, with names like Jack Tilton, Luke Franke, Carson Croy, Landen Louton, and Dougy Oberbeck poised to contribute. Newcomer Patrick Longo is expected to bring creativity and goal-scoring in the central midfield.
Speed and Strength Training: Progress Through Spring Sports
Several players are competing in track and field this spring to enhance their speed and explosiveness. Rhett Lederle has shined in sprint relays, while Adel Abudayeh has posted major gains in both vertical leap and 40-yard dash speed.
Fueling Performance (Sort Of)
Coach Enright admits that while the team distributes a dietary guide, “it’s only tacitly followed by some, and irregularly followed by a lot.” Nutrition is on the radar—but compliance is a work in progress!
Behind the Curtain: Coaching with a Strategic Edge
Though Coach Enright is keeping new strategies under wraps (“Yes, but that’s secret!”), it's clear the staff is planning deliberate tweaks to make this year’s squad as competitive as ever.
Community Connection & Fan Engagement
Francis Howell is continuing its strong tradition of community involvement. Players volunteer with SPENSA (Special Needs Soccer Association) and look forward to hosting their annual Junior Vikings youth camp in July—an opportunity to inspire the next generation.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Opportunity
With as many as 30 players displaying varsity-level ability, the biggest challenge will be finding the right mix of 11 to take the field
Add to that the reality of competing in a tough conference, district, and state, and the Vikings know they’ll be in for a battle every match.
“The talent is there,” Enright said. “Now, it’s about finding the right chemistry and executing in every moment.”
