Fullerton Union High School, located in Orange County, California, has set some serious goals for their varsity softball team this year. With the disbandment of their league, the Freeway League, the team is determined to claim the final title. They also have their sights set on the CIF Championship, a feat they haven't achieved since 2008. To find out more about the team and their strategies for success, we sat down with Coach Trevor Holton for a preview article. "We have set a goal to win the last year of the Freeway League," Coach Holton stated. "Orange County has realigned leagues and the Freeway League is disbanding. We have not won a league title since 2008. We also have a goal of getting back to the CIF Championship and winning this year." This ambitious goal is a testament to the determination and focus of the team. Coach Holton emphasizes the importance of staying humble and constantly striving for improvement. "Keys to success are to stay humble and keep grinding. We are always going to find ways to improve and get better, we will never look past any one game or opponent," he says. The team has some standout players, such as Malaya Majam-Finch and Zoey Bautista. Majam-Finch, who has been recognized as All CIF 1st team, All League First Team, and All County 2nd Team, is not only a skilled player but also a great worker who puts the team first. Bautista, who is also All CIF 1st team and All League First Team, is team captain and is known for her maturity, great glove, and clutch hitting. Another key player to watch is Melia Vera, who was recognized as All League First Team last season. As the starting shortstop, Vera is consistent, mild-mannered, and has a knack for coming through in the clutch. Coach Holton also mentions freshman Katelynn Mathews, who brings an added dimension to the team with her impressive command and composure on the mound. The team has also gained some talented transfers that will add depth to the roster. Hayley Brock, a skilled outfielder, is expected to lead off or bat 3rd in the lineup. Emi Todoroki, a corner infielder, will bat in the middle of the lineup and has committed to George Washington.
