The 2024-25 wrestling season was a historic and transformative one for Gaffney High School. With a deep, experienced lineup and a senior class that set the tone in leadership and performance, the Indians made significant strides, including a program-first win in the team playoffs.
Key Contributors and Impact
This year’s success was anchored by standout performances from Calvin Cook, Michael Mabry, Tyler Moore, Drew Ellis, and Jaxx Wullimann. Calvin, our reliable 106-pounder, consistently started duals strong with key wins. In the middleweights, Jaxx, Michael, Tyler, and Drew formed a dominant core that made it nearly impossible for opposing teams to maneuver around them. Their consistency and firepower often allowed us to clinch dual victories before we even hit our upper weights.
Season Highlights
Overall, it was a very successful season. We earned quality wins, had competitive showings in tight losses, and made a deep push into the second round of the team playoffs—a first in school history. All of our state qualifiers represented Gaffney with pride, securing multiple wins each at the state tournament.
Defining Moment
The signature moment of the season came in the first round of the team playoffs. Gaffney Wrestling had never advanced past that point—until now. We avenged an earlier-season loss and defeated Northwestern to make school history. That victory was a turning point and a major confidence boost for our program.
Emerging Talent
Gage Parks and Jamir Wroten, both sophomores in our upper weight classes, emerged as key contributors late in the season. When matches came down to the wire, these two stepped up and secured pins or crucial wins to seal victories. Their development bodes well for the future.
Handling Adversity
With an experienced roster and strong leadership, the team handled adversity like veterans. Whether facing injuries or tough losses, our senior class kept the team locked in and focused on postseason goals. When needed, JV wrestlers stepped up without missing a beat, showcasing the depth and resilience of the squad.
Senior Class Legacy
This group of seniors was the heartbeat of our team. Their discipline in training, poise in competition, and leadership in the locker room were all instrumental in our success. They set the example for what it takes to compete—and win—at a high level.
Looking Ahead
What excites us most is the work ethic and drive already being shown by our underclassmen. Many of them are hitting the offseason hard, attending multiple tournaments, club practices, and putting in hours in the weight room. Their hunger to build on this year’s success is evident.
Offseason Focus
With a younger roster expected next season, our focus will be on technical development. We want to correct small mistakes now to avoid bad habits later. That foundation will be key to continuing our upward momentum.
