The Guajome Park Academy cross-country team is gearing up for another exciting season under the leadership of head coach Melissa Marley. With a mix of returning players and promising new additions, this year’s team is shaping up to be a strong and cohesive unit.
When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Marley highlighted the team’s tight-knit bond and the fact that they are constantly striving to improve and grow as a team. She noted that the top returning players include Jennifer L., Ashley P., and Alex K. These three athletes stood out last season not only for their physical abilities but also for their positive attitudes and strong work ethic.
Jennifer L., a junior, has been a star on the team since her freshman year. She consistently finishes in the top five at meets and sets a high standard for her teammates with her dedication and determination. Ashley P., a senior, is another standout athlete who brings a wealth of experience to the team. Her natural talent, combined with her leadership skills, make her an invaluable asset to the team.
Alex K., also a senior, has continually improved her performance over the past three years and has shown great perseverance and determination, inspiring her teammates to do the same. Coach Marley also mentioned two new additions to the team who have the potential to make an immediate impact this season. She mentioned Andrew H. and Andrew Z., both sophomores, as players who have quickly adapted to the team’s training regimen and have already displayed impressive speed and endurance.
Coach Marley also noted their positive attitudes and strong work ethic, which bodes well for their potential on the team. When it comes to choosing team captains, Coach Marley looks for qualities beyond just athleticism. She believes that a good captain should not only be a role model in terms of their running abilities but also in their character and their ability to inspire and uplift their teammates.
She also values team players who are able to foster a sense of camaraderie and unity among the team. This season’s captains will most likely be chosen from a pool of experienced seniors, including Jennifer, Ashley, and Alex, who have shown exemplary leadership skills on and off the course.
However, Coach Marley also mentioned that there are other players who are in the running for a captain position and their roles will continue to be assessed throughout the season. Team chemistry and camaraderie are essential for any successful team, and the Guajome Park Academy cross-country team is no exception.
