Harlingen South Cross Country: Building for a Historic Run in 2025 With summer temperatures rising, so is the intensity of the Harlingen South Boys Cross Country team’s training. Under the guidance of Head Coach Nick Alfaro, the Hawks are preparing for a breakout 2025 campaign—one that could see them make school history. Offseason Focus: Mileage, Mentality, and Momentum The program’s offseason focus has been clear: increase mileage and build long-term endurance. Taking on a more demanding training load in the summer heat is all part of the plan to get the team race-ready when the season begins. The shift in training is aimed at building stronger, more resilient runners capable of thriving in high-pressure meets. Roster Strength: Full Team Returns For the Hawks, continuity is a strength. All seven varsity runners from last season are returning, giving Coach Alfaro a stable and experienced lineup to build upon. Among them is standout Sophomore State Qualifier Kai Sepulveda, who is determined to return to the UIL Texas State Meet and lead the team to new heights. Athletes to Watch: Breakout Season Ahead Coach Alfaro highlighted several athletes poised to make a major leap this season: Kai Sepulveda (Junior): A proven competitor on the state stage, ready to build on last year’s success. Isaiah Somoza (Junior) & Mason Somoza (Junior): A dynamic duo showing significant offseason progress. Dezmon Amaya (Sophomore): One of the program’s most promising young runners with strong potential for a breakout season. These runners have been grinding through the offseason, showing discipline and determination in every session. Coaching Perspective: Chasing School History The coaching staff has set its sights on a major goal: qualifying the boys team for the Regional Meet for the first time in school history. With a tougher training schedule and an emphasis on mental toughness and consistency, Coach Alfaro believes this group has what it takes. Biggest Challenge: District Competition Competing in the ultra-competitive 32-5A district, the Hawks will be challenged weekly by elite-level programs, including Weslaco East, Edcouch Elsa, Donna High, and others from the Rio Grande Valley. But rather than be intimidated, Harlingen South sees this as an opportunity to sharpen their edge ahead of the postseason. The 2025 season promises to be one of the most exciting yet for Harlingen South Cross Country. With every key runner returning, a rigorous offseason underway, and the chance to make history within reach, the Hawks are ready to soar.
