As the Highland High School flag football team gears up for another exciting season, Head Coach Kenny Golladay and his squad are focused on building a winning culture, developing strong leaders, and maintaining their dominance on the field. With a solid core of returning players and an emphasis on fitness, teamwork, and preparation, Highland is poised for another standout year. Offseason Focus Coach Golladay has prioritized identifying new leaders within the team and reinforcing the program's culture. Strength training remains a cornerstone of the offseason, with players hitting the weight room multiple times a week to build both physical endurance and mental toughness. Special Offseason Events The team has participated in various off-season activities to enhance skill development and foster team bonding: Team Building at Top Golf – A fun event to reconnect returning players and strengthen team camaraderie. Spring Ball – A three-week training period starting at the end of April, culminating in a major scrimmage game. Texas San Antonio Tournament – A competitive showcase at the end of May. Summer Football Camp – A four-day-a-week program integrating football drills and weight training. Key Players to Watch With 13 of 14 starters returning, Highland has an experienced roster filled with top-performing athletes: Kylie Riggs – One of the most dominant defensive players, ranked 2nd in the state in sacks. Alexis Eley – A dynamic quarterback who ranked 4th in total yards statewide. Kaitlyn Saunders – A lockdown defender and First-Team All-Conference DB. These players have committed themselves to rigorous off-season training and are expected to make a major impact this season. Strength and Conditioning Coach Golladay brings 12 years of experience as a head strength coach, having helped numerous athletes earn D1 scholarships. His philosophy centers on using weightlifting and fitness as a competitive advantage. The goal? To be the most physically conditioned team in the state. Nutrition and Wellness As a certified Sports Nutritionist, Coach Golladay provides daily nutrition plans for players at no cost. The team is encouraged to avoid fried foods and processed meals while incorporating more fruits and vegetables into their diets. Players are also advised to bring their own healthy meals to school. Coaching Strategy and Community Engagement The Highland program is deeply involved in the community, hosting year-round youth camps to introduce young athletes to flag football. Players take on mentorship roles in these camps, learning leadership skills while giving back to the sport. Challenges and Outlook With the sport's growing popularity, Highland faces a rising level of competition. Younger athletes are eager to compete for starting positions, increasing internal competition and pushing the team to continuously elevate its game. With an experienced roster, a strong coaching staff, and a commitment to both physical and mental preparation, Highland High School flag football is ready to take on the 2025 season with confidence and determination.
