At Horizon High School, the volleyball team is gearing up for another successful season with a talented and dedicated group of athletes. Led by head coach McKenna Skaggs, the team is ready to defend their state title and continue their winning streak. In this article, we had the opportunity to speak with Coach Skaggs about the team's top players, new additions to the team, their preparation for the season, and their goals and expectations. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Skaggs highlighted four senior players – outside hitter Teraya Sigler, setter Avery Ashcraft, libero/defensive specialist Ava Lambert, and junior middle blocker Sophia Gilbert. According to Coach Skaggs, these players have been instrumental in the team’s success and have emerged as leaders on and off the court. Teraya Sigler, who is a 3-time Team USA gold medalist and was named Gatorade Player of the Year, is a true force on the team. Coach Skaggs praised her leadership skills and how she brings the team together in stressful situations. As a result, Sigler has been chosen as one of the team captains this year. Avery Ashcraft, who is returning for her third season with the varsity team, has also been chosen as a team captain. Coach Skaggs commended her for her positivity and calmness, which helped the team stay focused and motivated. Even in the most stressful situations, Ashcraft has stepped up and been a voice for her team. Ava Lambert, who has been on varsity for the past three years, is known for her exceptional defense and endless energy on the court. She is described as a hard-working and commanding libero, and her teammates trust her completely. She has been an integral part of the team’s success and will continue to be a key player this season. Sophia Gilbert, a junior middle blocker, is returning after being out for the entire season last year due to an injury. Coach Skaggs mentioned that she has worked hard to recover from her injury and is eager to play and help the team win another state title. The team also has two new players who Coach Skaggs believes will make an immediate impact on the team – senior outside/opposite hitter Nia Tinsley and sophomore libero/defensive specialist Isabelle McIlroy.
