Coach Spencer Fortwengler has been coaching the track and field team at Hudson High School for the past five years. With a strong background in athletics and a passion for helping young athletes reach their potential, Coach Fortwengler has been instrumental in shaping the team into a competitive force in their league. As we approach the start of a new season, we spoke with Coach Fortwengler to get a preview of what we can expect from the team this year. When asked about the top returning players from last season, Coach Fortwengler proudly listed the names of Emma Leonardo, Maddie Haher, and Alessandra Burnett. These three female track stars have shown dedication and hard work in their training, making them stand out from the rest of the team. Leonardo, who specializes in the 200m, 4x400m, and Pole Vault, has consistently performed well in her events, setting personal records each season. Haher, who excels in the 400m, Long and Triple Jump, and the 4x400m, has also shown great improvement each year. Burnett, a versatile athlete, has shown promise in the 100/200m races and long jump. These three players are not only outstanding athletes, but they also possess the qualities of a great leader, setting an example for their teammates to follow. When it comes to selecting team captains, Coach Fortwengler looks for athletes who possess confidence, lead by example, and are dedicated to improving themselves and the team. This year, the role of captain will be filled by Maddie Haher, Marina Salem, Emma Leonardo, Anna Iacobucci, and Alessandra Burnett. These five athletes have shown great leadership skills and are ready to guide the team to success. Building team chemistry and camaraderie is crucial for any successful team, and Coach Fortwengler understands this. He plans on implementing team-building activities and group exercises to strengthen the bond between the athletes. By creating a supportive and positive team environment, Coach Fortwengler hopes to bring out the best in each player and foster a strong sense of unity within the team. Motivation plays a significant role in pushing athletes to reach their full potential. Coach Fortwengler understands this and focuses on building a positive mindset in his players. He believes that when athletes feel good and confident about themselves, they are more likely to perform well. By celebrating personal victories and showing his players how good it feels to win, Coach Fortwengler motivates his team to work harder and strive for success. The biggest challenge in preparing for this season has been finding the right event for each athlete. With a large team and a variety of events, it can be challenging to assign each athlete to their best-suited event. However, Coach Fortwengler and his coaching staff have been working hard to make sure each athlete is given the opportunity to excel in their chosen event. This season, the team's schedule is packed with quality opponents, providing many opportunities for the athletes to showcase their skills and compete against some of the best in the league. Coach Fortwengler believes that to be the best, you must beat the best, and he is looking forward to the tough competition that lies ahead. Coach Fortwengler's coaching style has remained consistent throughout the years, but he adapts to the different types of athletes on his team each season. He understands that each athlete is unique and requires a different approach to coaching. By recognizing the individual strengths and weaknesses of each player, Coach Fortwengler is able to tailor his coaching to bring out the best in each athlete. When it comes to training and conditioning, Coach Fortwengler has made some changes and improvements to the team's program. The team has ramped up their distance and weight room training, focusing on building a strong base and powerful legs. By improving their strength and speed, the athletes will be better equipped to excel in their events. The team's strengths lie in their ability to compete with some of the best in the league. However, their weakness is not having enough athletes to capture all the points in each meet. To overcome this, Coach Fortwengler plans on focusing on developing the team's strengths and working on a plan to improve their weaknesses. He believes that with hard work and determination, the team can overcome any obstacle and achieve success. In conclusion, Coach Fortwengler's coaching philosophy revolves around setting goals for each athlete to perform better each day and to grow and develop as a student-athlete. He believes that winning is important, but it's the small personal victories that bring the most joy in track and field. With a dedicated coaching staff and a team of motivated and talented athletes, the Hudson High School track and field team is ready to take on the upcoming season, and we can expect to see some impressive performances from them.
