Fresh Talent Joins the Ranks
With no major coaching changes or departures, the team is welcoming several promising 7th and 8th graders into the program. This infusion of young talent brings new energy and enthusiasm to the roster, signaling a bright future.
Runners to Watch: Nathaniel, Derek, and Nicandro on the Rise
Returning standout Nathaniel Hernandez has been training daily, shaving time off his mile and showing leadership through his commitment. Derek Bugarin, a varsity newcomer, has made a strong impression with his endurance and natural stride. Both are expected to play key roles this fall.
Nicandro Natividad Jr. — a dedicated student-athlete — will be completing basic training over the summer as he begins his journey with the military. His commitment to service and discipline sets him apart, and we’re excited to welcome him back to Najim for his senior year. With a renewed sense of purpose and unmatched mental toughness, Nicandro is poised to make a significant impact on the cross-country team in his senior year.
Training Innovations: Strength, Power, and Data
The offseason program includes core stability and plyometric circuits twice a week, enhancing stride power and injury resilience. The team also integrates Coach Steve Silvey’s 60-minute workouts, tailored for long-distance runners.
Data tracking and individualized running plans are now part of the coaching approach. Rest and recovery are being prioritized to ensure athletes peak at the right time.
Nutrition and Wellness
While no formal nutrition program is in place yet, Coach Cochran and the staff promote healthy habits and hydration awareness, especially vital during hot Texas summers.
Coaching Perspective: Smarter Training, Sharper Results
“We’re embracing a more personalized coaching style this year,” said Cochran. “That means balancing workload, emphasizing recovery, and using training metrics to monitor growth.”
Community Connection: Running with Purpose
The cross-country team has made a point to engage with the local community. From volunteering at races to maintaining a growing social media presence, the team is building school spirit and public support.
Challenges Ahead: Heat and Balance
Managing extreme heat during summer and early-season training will be a challenge, as will helping student-athletes balance academics and athletics. However, with smart planning and committed leadership, Coach Cochran is confident in the team’s ability to rise above.
