IDEA Riverview Basketball Sets New Standard in 2025: A Season of Growth, Grit, and Momentum
Under the guidance of Head Coach Brian Salazar, the IDEA Riverview College Prep basketball program took a significant step forward during the 2025 winter season. As both a Special Education teacher and basketball coach, Coach Salazar wears many hats—but his commitment to developing young men both on and off the court has never been clearer. With a record-setting season and a renewed culture of hard work, resilience, and leadership, IDEA Riverview is laying the foundation for a promising future.
Leading the Charge: Key Contributors Drive Progress
Every successful season starts with leadership, and for Coach Salazar, three standout players made a substantial impact: sophomores Oziel Escobedo and Manuel Guerra, and senior Alfonzo Ibarra.
“Oziel and Manuel, both sophomores, played a major role on the team as captains,” Salazar explained. “Their leadership and loyalty were crucial in guiding the team to achieve the most victories in the program’s history.” These young leaders not only held their own on the court but set the tone for the entire squad, building accountability and effort into every practice and game.
Senior Alfonzo Ibarra brought something every team needs—experience and maturity. “He used his experience to motivate and push the younger players to give their best effort,” Salazar added. As a seasoned athlete, Alfonzo became a mentor figure, showing the underclassmen what it takes to compete and lead. Together, these three players helped propel IDEA Riverview to a 7-11 record, the best in the program’s history.
A Season of Growth and Milestones
Coach Salazar viewed the 2025 season as a turning point—not just in the win column, but in the evolution of the program’s culture. “Overall, I believe we had a great season,” he said. “The program made significant improvements both mentally and physically. Throughout the season, the team grew and learned a lot.”
That growth was visible in both practices and games. The team began to compete with more confidence, demonstrating maturity and a stronger grasp of the pace and flow of varsity-level basketball. More importantly, they showed they belonged on the court against competitive programs.
Defining Moments on the Court
Among the highlights of the season was a dramatic showdown with a playoff-caliber team—a game that proved to be a defining moment in the Bulldogs’ campaign. “It was a hard-fought battle against a team we were never expected to be competitive with,” Salazar recalled. “The game was a roller coaster, and the energy in the gym was electric.”
Despite ultimately falling short by a single point, the matchup was a testament to the team’s heart, resilience, and upward trajectory. Competing at that level gave the players a taste of what’s possible and fueled their belief in their own potential.
Player Development and Breakout Stars
One of the most inspiring aspects of the season was watching individual players rise to meet the demands of varsity competition. Among them, Edgar Duenez stood out for his dedication and growth.
“Edgar showed tremendous growth this season,” said Salazar. “He’s the type of player who’s the first one in the gym and the last one to leave. He’s always eager to learn and is extremely coachable.” With his passion for the game and relentless work ethic, Edgar emerged as a player to watch, setting the tone for effort and improvement throughout the team.
Responding to Adversity and Rising Under Pressure
Challenges are inevitable in sports, and for IDEA Riverview, the 2025 season brought its share of tough losses and high-pressure situations. But rather than shy away, the Bulldogs rose to the occasion.
“This year we competed at a higher level,” Salazar explained. “Instead of wondering whether we could keep up with other teams, we found ourselves under pressure in close-game situations.”
The team’s response was mature and focused. They reviewed film, adjusted their strategies, and worked harder in practice to fine-tune their decision-making. This level of accountability and determination speaks volumes about the program’s evolution and the mindset of its players.
Senior Leadership: Leaving a Legacy
Though IDEA Riverview only had one senior this season, his impact was outsized. “Our senior brought great energy and leadership to our underclassmen,” said Salazar. “By helping them and pushing them during workouts and drills, he supported their development and made the learning process easier.”
That kind of mentorship and commitment is priceless in a young program, and his legacy will surely be felt for seasons to come.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future
One of the most exciting aspects of the 2025 season is what lies ahead. With the majority of the team returning, including the key sophomore captains and rising contributors like Edgar, the future looks bright.
“What excites me the most is that the majority of my players will be returning next season,” Salazar said. “They now have valuable varsity experience and understand the rhythm and pace of the game.”
Even more encouraging is the pipeline of talent waiting in the wings. New players coming off the bench and into more prominent roles will bring fresh energy and additional depth to an already motivated squad.
Offseason Focus: Growth Beyond the Game
Coach Salazar is making full use of the offseason to prepare both himself and his players for next season. “During the offseason, I can focus on improving by studying game film, attending coaching clinics, and reading up on strategy and leadership,” he shared.
He also plans to prioritize player development, build a stronger team culture, and enhance communication on and off the court. Through open gyms, strength programs, and refined tryout strategies, IDEA Riverview will continue laying the groundwork for a successful future.
