A Preview of the 2019 Imperial High School Track Team
The Imperial High School track team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. With the goal of becoming I.V.L. champions as well as Div. 3 champions, the team is focused and determined to make their mark in the track world.
We sat down with Coach Wolfgang Horner to get a preview of the team and what we can expect from them this year.
When asked about standout athletes on the team, Coach Horner quickly mentioned Jared Nixon and Alfredo Darami. Jared is a skilled jumper and Alfredo is a talented sprinter, currently holding the title of 100 meter sprinter. These two athletes are not only standout performers on the track, but also serve as strong team leaders. Coach Horner describes them as role models for the younger players on the team, setting a high standard for hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship.
With such strong leaders on the team, Coach Horner makes it a point to remind his players that they can always improve their own personal records to reach their own personal goals. This mindset of continuous improvement is a key aspect of the team's training and overall approach to the sport.
Coach Horner himself believes that there is always room for improvement and works closely with each athlete to identify areas of growth and development.
When it comes to his coaching style, Coach Horner admits that it can vary depending on the athletes he is working with. He believes that every athlete is unique and responds differently to training methods and feedback. As a coach, he strives to adapt his approach to best suit the needs of each individual and bring out their full potential.
In terms of team dynamics, Coach Horner emphasizes the importance of teamwork in track. The sport may be viewed as an individual one, with athletes competing in their own individual events, but he stresses that track is also very much a team sport. Team scores are crucial in track meets and every member's contribution, no matter how seemingly small, can make a difference in the overall outcome of the competition.
For the Imperial High School track team, attendance at practices and meets is a top priority. However, Coach Horner also understands the demands of being a student athlete. He allows his athletes to attend after school tutoring sessions and come in late to practice if necessary. He recognizes that academics should always take precedence and that a balance between school and sports is crucial for the success of his athletes.
