As we transition into the offseason at Independence High School, I couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead for our volleyball program. This offseason is especially exciting for me as it's my first full offseason with this team. Last season, we experienced great success, but the journey didn’t fully start until I began training with the team in late June. This year, we’re starting early and with purpose.
Offseason Focus
Our primary focus this offseason has been on conditioning and plyometrics. Increasing our players' vertical jumps and explosiveness will be a key factor in our success next season. Plyometric exercises will help us in those game-changing moments where a quick, powerful move makes all the difference. Additionally, conditioning isn't just about physical development; it's a great team bonding experience. Regardless of age, every athlete on the team is training together. It's been fantastic to watch the girls, from freshmen to upperclassmen, grow closer both on and off the court through shared challenges.
Special Offseason Events
While we are not attending any team camps this summer, due to many of our players being heavily involved in club volleyball, we are continuing to hold open gyms and conditioning sessions throughout the summer. These open gyms serve as a great way to maintain our skills and build momentum without risking burnout before the official season begins. This approach allows our athletes to stay in shape while still prioritizing their club commitments.
Notable Additions & Departures
We had a few significant departures this offseason, most notably six seniors who contributed greatly to last year’s success. However, we are fortunate to have a young, talented group coming up the ranks. There are several promising players from our JV team, and we’re also welcoming some talented incoming freshmen who will be trying out. The future is looking bright, and I’m confident that these new additions will help us continue to grow and succeed.
Weight Lifting and Fitness
One unique aspect of our offseason training has been my decision to join the conditioning sessions alongside the players. It’s important to me that they see I am committed to the same level of effort and dedication. This creates a sense of camaraderie as we push each other through tough drills and conditioning exercises. One of the most rewarding aspects of our team culture is the mutual support and encouragement the players offer each other, both on and off the court. They truly are each other’s biggest fans, and that positive energy is contagious.
Nutrition
As for nutrition, I always encourage my athletes to fuel their bodies in ways that work best for them. While I don’t impose a strict nutrition program, I do take the time to educate them about how to fuel themselves for optimal performance. Whether it's the best foods to eat before a game or what snacks will give them the most energy during practices, I want them to understand how important their nutrition is to their success both on the court and in life.
Coaching Preparation
We are already well into preparing for the upcoming season. From the end of April through June, we will hold position-specific specialty sessions. These training sessions will allow us to develop and refine skills in every position on the court, creating more unity across our teams—freshmen, JV, and varsity. This focus on technical training will pay off greatly when we transition into game-style practices later in the season. We are also working on ensuring that all teams have a consistent approach to our playbook, set names, and overall team strategy.
Fan Engagement & Community Impact
One of my main goals for next season is to increase our presence in the school community. We had a good improvement in fan engagement last season, but I am hoping for even more student support in the gym this coming season. To help foster this, I’ve required each of my players to attend one sporting event for another team during the season to show our support for all of our school’s athletes. Additionally, we’re in the process of planning a summer camp for younger players. Details are still being worked out, but we’re excited to connect with our local community and share our passion for the game.
Biggest Challenges Ahead
Looking ahead to the season, our biggest challenge will be the transition from 5A to 6A. This move presents new opponents and new challenges, but it’s also an opportunity for us to rise to the occasion. The 6A division is home to some very talented teams, and we’re excited to see how we stack up. Our goal is to continue developing as a program and make a strong run at the state tournament again.
I am incredibly excited about the future of this program and cannot wait to see how we perform next season. The hard work being put in now will pay off when we hit the court for the official season. Go Independence Volleyball!
