James Madison High School Varsity Golf: Offseason Report
Offseason Focus
This offseason, the Madison Warhawks have zeroed in on course strategy—understanding and executing the proper way to play each specific golf course to maximize output. “Each course has its own unique layout,” said Head Coach Mike Serone. “If you don’t play it the right way, your score can elevate quickly.”
Coach Serone, now entering his fourth season since taking over in 2022, emphasized that the team’s culture has undergone a complete rebuild. With that comes heightened expectations. “We believe this season will look very different as we continue to compete at high levels and produce quality results.”
Notable Additions & Departures
The Warhawks are graduating two key contributors: three-year starter Colin Park and standout female golfer Ashlyn Choi. “They’ve both been instrumental to our success in recent years,” Serone said. However, the program is optimistic thanks to a promising group of underclassmen ready to step up and fill those roles.
Players to Watch
Two rising stars headline Madison's 2025 campaign:
Ryan Moseley (Class of 2027): A proven competitor, Moseley won the Concorde District individually and placed 4th Overall in Region 6D, earning a spot in the VHSL Class 6 State Tournament in which he finished in the Top 50% of all participants. “Ryan came into his Sophomore year determined to make a statement, and that he did. He will be expected to take a big jump and fill the shoes of (Colin) Park’s exit as the leader of this program.” Serone described.
Jack Cilman (Class of 2027): Close behind, Cilman placed 3rd in the District, showing consistency and the potential for a breakout season. “Jack can score with anyone. He has the length off the tee, which you do not commonly see in High School Golf, that gives him an advantage right out of the gate.” Serone mentioned.
Freshman standout Carter Cunningham (Class of 2028) also turned heads by carding a personal-best 80 at the Stallion Invitational in his first High School competition. “Carter averaged 81.2 over 18 holes during the season and showed impressive consistency for a freshman,” Serone noted.
Ethan Wasserman (Class of 2026): Wasserman has been a big addition to the defending Concorde District winning Warhawks. Starting to play golf only two years ago, he has worked to become an important part in the core of this program. “Ethan has been arguably the hardest worker in the program.
He scored a career low 79 in the Regional Tournament. He is a fly under the radar kind of player, and his scores will potentially cause eyebrows to raise.” Serone said.
Fan Engagement & Community Impact
Coach Serone and his staff have made significant strides in building community engagement. A prime example is the "Hawk & Griffin Cup", a Ryder Cup-style event held at Westwood Country Club against crosstown rival George C. Marshall High School. Co-founded with GCMHS Coach John Windt, the match is sponsored by the local Hawk & Griffin Restaurant and has become a celebrated tradition. With a live scoreboard for fans to follow and strong community turnout, the event has brought excitement and visibility to high school golf in Vienna. Madison currently leads the series 2–0, but each match has come down to the wire.
Biggest Challenges Ahead
The Warhawks anticipate tough competition within Region 6D, home to several strong programs. Navigating courses like Regional Tournament host Bristow Manor will require mental discipline and precise execution. “It is a tough course to manage. Yet, if you play it strategically, you’ll find yourself with opportunities that others will miss out on.” said Serone.
Summary:
With a revitalized culture, rising talent, and a growing community presence, James Madison High School Golf is poised for an exciting 2025 season. Coach Serone’s leadership and strategic emphasis are setting the stage for continued success both on and off the course.
