As the fall season approaches, the John Burroughs High School volleyball team is gearing up for another exciting year. With a strong mix of experienced players and promising new talent, this year's team is poised to make a mark in the competitive world of high school volleyball. We sat down with Coach Joel Brinton to get a preview of what fans can expect from the team this season.
One of the first questions on everyone's mind is who will be the players to watch on the John Burroughs team this year. Coach Brinton wasted no time in highlighting four players who he believes will make an immediate impact on the team - Benji Ly, Ryder Tafoya, Caiden Shrode, and Noah Duffield.
Benji Ly, a senior outside hitter, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the team. With his strong hitting and defensive abilities, he is sure to be a key player on the court. Senior opposite hitter Ryder Tafoya is another returning player who will be a force to be reckoned with. His powerful hits and strong blocking make him a threat to any opponent.
Caiden Shrode, a senior setter, will also play a crucial role in the team's success this season. With his precise setting and leadership skills, he will be a key player in creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Last but certainly not least, sophomore outside hitter Noah Duffield is a rising star who is expected to make a big impact on the team this year. With his height, athleticism, and strong hitting, he has the potential to become a dominant force on the court.
As for team chemistry and camaraderie, Coach Brinton believes that the three captains - Ryder, Caiden, and Nathan Spratt - will play a crucial role in fostering a strong team dynamic. While Nathan is unfortunately out for the season due to an injury, he still plays an important role in leading and setting an example for the team. These three captains not only bridge the gap between the team and coaching staff, but they also serve as role models for their teammates.
When asked about any changes to his coaching style this season, Coach Brinton emphasized the team's focus on playing against tough opponents. He explained, "We play in some tough tournaments this year and have a schedule that is full of tough opponents as we look to play high-level teams that will help us push us to find the best version of ourselves." This mentality of constantly challenging themselves and striving for improvement will undoubtedly lead to a successful season for the John Burroughs team.
In addition to a strong mental approach, the team has also made significant changes and improvements to their training and conditioning program. Coach Brinton stressed the importance of preparation, quoting legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight, "The separation is in the preparation." With this in mind, the team has focused on rigorous training and conditioning to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.
The John Burroughs High School volleyball team has high hopes for the upcoming season, and with good reason. With a talented and experienced group of players, strong team chemistry and leadership, and a focus on constantly improving, this team is ready to take on any opponent. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive season from the John Burroughs team as they strive to reach their full potential.
