Offseason Focus
(Quote from Freshmen Cheerleaders Ann Marie C. and Dreama C.)
“As we move into our offseason in mid-April, our team will be focusing on becoming stronger than we are in the current season. We will use this time to build our strength, flexibility, and endurance through lifting, cardio, and stretching. It’s essential to stay in shape and challenge ourselves to improve, whether it’s refining our skills in tumbling or perfecting our jumps and cheers. We are presented with an opportunity to work individually and collaboratively, mastering the basics while supporting one another, as we know we will grow stronger together.”
Throughout the season, the team has engaged in full-out practices and extra reps on jumps and motions, emphasizing feedback and personal growth. Lessons in leadership, resilience, and energy management will guide the team’s offseason goals.
Special Offseason Events
While still in competition mode, the team is preparing for the Senate Cheer Championship, hosted by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. On April 11, 2025, I am happy to say we competed and won first place in the City Cheer Senate Championship. This year has become our undefeated year in competitions.
Notable Additions & Departures
The end of the season will bring heartfelt goodbyes, as eight seniors graduate, several of whom have been with the program for up to four years, including the team’s captain and co-captain. Additionally, longtime head coach Aziah Kado will be retiring after over a decade of leadership to focus on her career and family. Though her presence will be missed, the team remains committed to excellence and continuity.
Coaching Perspective
Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, the coaching staff is planning a robust preparation schedule beginning with tryouts in May. The team will participate in CMSD summer camps, host open gyms, and join collaborative training sessions with other cheer squads. Coaches are introducing new strategies focused on innovation, strength and conditioning, and skill development. Emphasis will also be placed on team-building and mental resilience to better prepare for the season ahead.
Fan Engagement & Community Impact
Community is at the heart of John Hay Cheer. The team will soon be honored at an upcoming City Council meeting, recognizing their dedication and performance. They also stay active in local parades, school events, and community service. In the offseason, fans can expect updates via social media and access to cheer clinics, where the public can interact with the squad and be part of the team spirit.
Biggest Challenges Ahead
With the departure of key senior leaders, the program is focused on rebuilding team chemistry and developing new talent. Building trust and communication among a fresh group of athletes will be crucial. Another challenge lies in maintaining motivation and positivity as the team pursues excellence and sets its sights on a state title run. The road ahead will require persistence, confidence, and unity.
