The KIPP San Jose Collegiate High School cross country team is gearing up for another season of success under the guidance of Coach Mariko Kuga. Coach Kuga has been coaching the team for four years now and is committed to helping each and every one of her athletes reach their full potential, both on and off the course. The team has set some ambitious goals for this season, including qualifying for CCS (Central Coast Section) for both the boys and girls teams and sending a student to the CIF state finals. But Coach Kuga's focus goes beyond just these tangible goals. She is also determined to develop strong student leadership and promote positive sportsmanship among her team. One of the key factors in the team's success will be the top returning players from last season. These include a mix of consistent and dependable runners who also serve as strong role models and motivators for their teammates. Coach Kuga does not solely base her choices for team captain on speed or placement, but instead looks for individuals who embody qualities such as passion, positivity, and the ability to bring the team together. The team's training and conditioning program has also been tailored to create a strong sense of team chemistry and camaraderie. Coach Kuga believes that cross country is a truly communal sport, where all members of the team, regardless of their level of ability, work together to overcome challenges and support one another. This team mentality not only fosters a strong sense of community, but also helps to build important life skills such as discipline and respect. One of the unique aspects of cross country is the way it brings together athletes from different grades and genders. Coach Kuga encourages her team to bond and support each other, regardless of their individual running abilities. She also emphasizes the importance of meeting her athletes where they are at, whether it be in terms of their level of competition or their personal goals for participating in the sport. This inclusive approach has helped to create a strong team dynamic and a positive environment for all members. As for any new strategies or plays for this season, Coach Kuga takes a personal approach to coaching and tailors her methods to fit the team's needs in the moment. She draws on her own experience as a high school cross country runner and incorporates lessons she learned about the importance of teamwork and supporting each other. Regardless of the tactics used, Coach Kuga's coaching philosophy remains the same: to meet the team where they are at and support them in achieving their personal and team goals.
