The 2025 season for the Klein High Bearkats was a year of promise, heartbreak, and growth. Under the leadership of Head Coach John Lawhon, the team showcased flashes of brilliance and resilience, even as they faced their share of challenges.
Strong Start, Tough Finish
The season began with a bang. After a thrilling 5-5 draw against Kingwood in a scrimmage and a convincing win over Cy Creek, the Bearkats rolled into the regular season with impressive victories against Stratford, George Ranch, Cy Ranch, and Windmill Lakes. A 1-1 tie with powerhouse The Woodlands was a clear sign the team could compete with the best.
District play began with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Klein Cain, the eventual 6A State Champions. While the Bearkats remained undefeated in their first five district matches, ties began to pile up. A mid-season slump saw the team lose several close games, many in the dying seconds—a recurring theme that haunted the team throughout the campaign. Despite a late push, including two wins in their final three games, the team narrowly missed out on a playoff berth, finishing with a 7-9-5 record.
Key Contributors
Enrique Ventura led the team in scoring with 13 goals, while Cameron Hoschar added 10, stepping up especially during district play to spark the offense when needed most. Hoschar’s growth throughout the season was a major positive, as he emerged as a consistent threat and a player to watch moving forward.
Defining Moments
Several late-game heartbreakers defined the emotional rollercoaster of the season. The Bearkats lost four matches in the final moments—once with just one second left, and others with 4, 5 seconds, and under three minutes to play. These crushing defeats made wins even sweeter and gave the young squad hard-earned lessons in composure and perseverance.
Resilience Through Adversity
Injuries plagued the starting lineup, but the team remained unified and determined. Younger players were forced into bigger roles, gaining valuable experience that will benefit the program for years to come. “We stayed very positive even when we were struggling to get wins,” said Coach Lawhon. “The players worked extremely hard.”
Senior Leadership & Future Outlook
The senior class served as steady leaders through ups and downs, setting the tone in practice and maintaining a positive culture throughout the squad. With an undefeated JV team and a core group of varsity players returning with experience, the Bearkats are poised for a strong bounce-back season. “Our JV went undefeated and as freshmen, went 16-2,” Lawhon noted. “We’re going to be mixing in some great players with varsity-tested talent.”
Offseason Goals
The coaching staff has a clear vision: increase the win column. “We only won 7 games and tied 5—we think we can be a team that wins 15 or more next season,” Lawhon said.
With momentum building and a strong foundation laid, Klein High is a team to watch in 2026.
