As the new season approaches, Coach Michael Pecjak and the Lake Catholic High School girls’ basketball team are determined to put last year's performance behind them and show that they are a force to be reckoned with. With a talented group of returning players and some promising new additions, the team is eager to improve and make a mark in the competitive world of high school basketball.
One of the team's biggest strengths comes from their returning players, who have all shown great potential in the past and are ready to step up their game this season. What makes them stand out is their determination to improve and move forward from last year's disappointments. Leading the pack are senior Carmella Sowers, juniors Ella Zampedro and Ava Budrys Rini, and sophomores Maddie Cox and Teigan Delgrosso.
These players have all had starting roles at some point last year and bring a wealth of experience and depth to the team. In terms of new players, Coach Pecjak has hinted at some promising additions to the team. Seniors Sophia Iannini and Olivia Kitchen, along with juniors Avery Budrys Rini and Layla Kastner, are all expected to make an immediate impact on the team. These players have been working hard in the off-season and have shown great potential during practices and scrimmages.
Also, keep an eye out for sophomore Keira Schulz, who is battling for a captain role and has shown great leadership skills at a young age. Speaking of captains, Coach Pecjak stressed the importance of selecting players who possess certain qualities to lead the team. These include being a leader on and off the court, being accountable for their actions, and inspiring their teammates to perform at their best.
The coaching staff is still in the process of deciding on captains for this season, but they are looking for players who genuinely care about their teammates as people, not just as players. As the team focuses on improving their performance and achieving their goals, team chemistry and camaraderie will play a crucial role. The coaching staff has organized a team bonding camp and plans to continue activities throughout the year to build a strong bond among the players. They believe that a united team will always perform better on the court. Motivation is also a key factor in pushing the players to their full potential.
