With the start of the new school year comes the start of a new cross country season at Legacy High School. Excitement is building as the team prepares for what they hope will be a successful season. We had the opportunity to speak with Coach Steve Urban about the team's upcoming season and get a preview of what we can expect from them. Top Returning Players: When asked about the team's top returning players, Coach Urban shared that they are looking for strong performances from both the girls' and guys' teams this season. Among the top returning players are Amelia Smetzer, Leah Smith, and Jensyn Pitz for the girls' team, and Trevor Kerns and Tom McKevit for the boys' team. These players have been working hard over the summer and have shown great dedication to their sport. Coach Urban attributes their success to their determination, positive attitude, and strong work ethic. New Players: The team also has a group of new players who are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. On the boys' side, Matthew Niedermuller, Cody Tabor, Collin Harvey, Finlay Marsh, Clyde Seabury, Sam Godfrey, and Lincoln Phillips are all expected to have a strong presence on the team. For the girls, Amelia Crowley, Mia Hauschild, Jensyn Pitz, Shea Mackin, Tessa Weimer, and Marlene Moreno will bring fresh talent to the team. Qualities of Team Captains: As for the team captains, Coach Urban looks for players who demonstrate strong leadership skills, dedication to the sport, and the ability to motivate and unite their teammates. For the girls' team, Amelia Smetzer, Leah Smith, and Jensyn Pitz are captains for the upcoming season. On the boys' team, Finlay Marsh and Matthew Niedermuller will take on the role of team captains. Team Chemistry and Camaraderie: Coach Urban stresses the importance of team chemistry and camaraderie for the success of the team. He believes that having a strong bond between teammates leads to better performances on the field. This season, the captains will play a crucial role in creating a positive and supportive team dynamic. Motivating Players: To motivate players to push themselves to their full potential, Coach Urban organizes long group runs to different locations away from the school. These runs not only challenge the athletes physically but also help build mental toughness and team unity.
